What is the common thread for these offers (excluding UMM)? -- applying for a scholarship and being considered as a finalist?

yes--although many schools don't require a seperate application for the merit scholarships

So far the only schools that offer travel reimbursement that aren't invitation only seem to be Hesston, Trinity Lutheran, and U MN-Morris (admitted students only). Anyone know of others?

A bit off topic, but does the college allow you to change the date of the return flight? (So after visiting that college for a day or two, you would have a few more days to look at other colleges in the area.) Would it be rude to ask since they are paying for the flight?

I don't know the answer, but I'd advise asking the question without mentioning WHY you want to stay on longer. You might say a generalized thing like, "I'd like to spend some time in the region" but of course don't get specific that you'd "like to visit other colleges."

I've never been in this situation, so I don't know if it's done . If you decide to ask, I strongly suggest: be very vague about "why" you hope to stay on longer! It's polite, not dishonest, IMHO.

My d is a recruited athlete and was advised by her high school coach that it is very poor form to try and combine visits and that there is no polite/right way to do it. She took some very inconvenient back to back trips from the west to the northeast this fall, but never had to feel guilty about what she was up to (they know why you want to stay longer, and its not to see the leaves change.) As my dad used to say, "dance with the one that brung you."

"Does Cornell?"

Yes, they offered trips to both my daughters. Neither took them up on it but I think they were chartered bus trips from our area.

By the way, one of my daughters was invited to several of those diversity weekends but only attended one school's. (Really, because the schools were too far and it involved missing too much school. We planned visits at better times.) She eventually found out that many of the kids on the weekend were not accepted. So an invitation does not guarantee admission.

Oh, and all these invitations were before my daughters applied. Girls are URM and they were diversity weekends.

Pittsburgh wasn't about a scholarship, or a special program, and my younger d. is far from an academic superstar.

mini, what factors made Pittsburgh offer to pay for your d's trip?

My son got flight reimbursement from Allegheny college in PA. They offered it to students who fly without their parents to attend an admitted students event. He was picked up at the Pitts. airport, about an hour from the college, taken to the college and returned the same way. The event was one or two nights with free dorm housing and meals. While he was offered merit aid, it wasn't that much compared to the school he ended up attending.

My D was a finalist for a top scholarship at Furman. Because the school has a separate top scholarship just for kids from the state in which it is located, most students attending D's scholarship event were from OOS. The school put us up in a nice hotel for the night. No travel reimbursement, though. D & I used frequent flyer miles to attend.

Carleton offers partial reimbursement to National Merit semifinalists who visit accepted student days (half the cost of airfare up to $250). And Hamilton has a special scholarship fund for travel for students from Texas, Oklahoma, or South Carolina (weird combination, but it's a restricted fund - what can they do?)

She was also invited to Scholar Day at a couple other LAC's. Rumor had it that these schools tended to bump up scholarship offers for students who attended these events (D had received scholarships to each). She chose not to go, because travel expenses were not included.

Oh, and Denison offered to pay airfare (all or part ... can't remember) to accepted student day.

d's and h's flight and hotel were taken care of when she visited UCF. she was nmf.

offers of travel reimbursements from some others.....sometimes for a set amount like $200.00 or under. these were usually state schools seeking nmf's.

never hurts to ask. contact admissions and the honors departments.
