So I applied as a transfer and did not get in; anyone have suggestions for schools that are similar/remind you of Tulane? ...some that collegeboard.com may not suggest

Is there a particular area that you are majoring in, certain region of the country, any other criteria or specifics? I'm applying for the freshman class, but hopefully there's some other transfer students that can help.

no_moss i have a question. i have also applied to tulane as a transfer and havent heard back yet. do u mind telling me what your college GPA is, and where you go to school/ what year you are? i am getting VERY concerned

as far as tulane like alternatives -- there is always loyola if it's the city you're looking for. although the school as a whole is HUGELY different. there's also vanderbilt which is a very similar southern school, and is also in a very fun city. it might be harder for you though b.c it's considered a better school than tulane

thanks, in very short, things I found most appealing about Tulane (that I'm now looking for elsewhere):
+southern school with a northern air about it (if this makes sense... i went to a new england prep school so i'm not sure I could handle a "true life: i'm a southern belle" atmosphere) +smart but laid-back kids
+tight-knit community
+set in a fun, culturally rich city

major: communication
other draws: great study abroad programs, transfer deadline hasn't passed

any suggestions would be amazing
also, it doesn't have to be in the south, just east coast

anna:

haha i know exactly how you fear, i was absolutely losing it waiting to here, so sure I'll share...

(have an unconventional post-high school history)
volunteered in africa>1 year at top 50 liberal arts (gpa: atrocious, very little credits)>withdrew to get marketing experience>caught up freshmen credits/got some soph credits at large top 100 university near home

current class: 1/2 of a sophomore? it's a little confusing...
gpa at current college : 3.7

****. i only have a 3.8 which really isnt much better than yours, and i didnt spend a year in africa. UGH now im freaking out

you might want to try you UMAIMI also if its that northern school in the south your looking for. i mean there's always emory, rice, uva and vandy, but if u didnt get into tulane...it might not make sense to apply to those. sometimes its a crap shoot tho so u never know. i cnt believe u didnt get into tulane with that profile. i mean maybe it has to due with the market. i heard big schools are excepting far less kids relying on fafsa and far more (less qualified) who can pay in full

Since you OK with east coast, Goucher might be a good choice. Great study abroad, and while I don't know specifically about communications, the president of the university is Sandy Ungar, a famous journalist (NPR, Voice of America, etc.). And is in suburban Baltimore, so you have that plus DC. Check it out, you might be able to convince them to look at you even if deadline has passed (and I have no idea if it has or not).

dude i got deferred from tulane but got into Umiami, and im so much happier i got into miami

Interesting that U Miami is being mentioned. My neighbor went to Andover for prep, then to Tulane for undergraduate. When I was talking to him about colleges, he really raved about U Miami. My school limited the number of colleges we could apply, so I didn't apply, but I wish I had. So, maybe that's a sign that you would like the feel of it.

caro- I honestly wouldn't sweat based on gpa comparison, largely because my record is tainted with gpa's that my parents would never slap on their bumpers
I'm also leaning towards the crap shoots theory (i felt I had about 60% shot at Tulane)

As for vanderbilt, i was planning on pulling my app, that is until I looked at the transfer acceptance % this morning (tulane: 20% / vandy: 56%!)
FIRST OF ALL, T's % has definitely changed since I first started looking or else I may not have applied! Secondly I know vandy's could be significantly higher due to a smaller, higher quality applicant pool, but apparently tulane's applicant pool has gone from swampy stagnant water to at least Figi or even smartwater...

yeah, i also applied to vanderbilt as a transfer. i know they accept far more students then tulane, but they also have a much more qualified pool of applicants. my friend just got rejected with a 3.93 from boston university. im not really expecting to get in myself. but, if i were you i wouldnt pull the app. why not try.

ugh. this whole thing is making me sick. the only school im interested in is tulane. this sucks.

did u submit your SAT scores. if so, what were they.

and would u mind telling me what school u go to? you dont have to if u dont want

if you're not limiting yourself to the south fordham and northeastern have late deadlines, and are very good schools

Definitely UMiami. My husband went to Tulane, and I went to UMiami. Can't get over how similar the schools are in terms of type of people to go to.

Miami, however, is in the suburb of Coral Gables, but they've since built a monorail right across from campus, so I'm guessing transportation is easier.

Miami's campus is gorgeous, the academics are top notch, and you'll have more than your fair share of Yankees there.

I'm shocked at how much transfer admissions have changed in 4 years. I transferred to Tulane in 2005 prior to Hurricane Katrina. I had a 3.8 from a really small, unknown 4 year school (Southeastern Louisiana University). I got into Tulane, Emory, and Vanderbilt. I ended up getting a nice scholarship from Tulane also. It's crazy to me that I probably wouldn't even get in today, much less receive a scholarship offer.

For what it is worth, all the guides and sites that focus on these kinds of things say there is a very large overlap in the kids that apply to Tulane and U Miami.

monstar, im SURE you would have still gotten in. tulane HUGELY favors kids from LA. they even have a grantee policy for them if they have about a 3.5 gpa and like a combine score of 1800 on the sat....which out of state wouldnt sand a chance

WOW umiami has its fans! almost a year of research and i never even considered it...
as much as i try to approach every school with an open mind I guess, subconsciously, i couldn't overlook its reputation: seriously superficial party school? (or is that unfair)
also not sure how i feel about college life in miami

right now i have an app pending at emerson (i know nothing like tu), need to finish my vandy app, and will apply to northeastern...

any thoughts on george washington/american/wake forest/unc (remembering i didn't get into tulane)

this is just reaffirming that there is just no where like tulane, bummer.

UMiami rep is just that....rep......many, many top students attend on merit scholarships (also generous like Tulane)....

Incidently, if you think Tulane is any less of a "party school" than the others on your list, (or Miami) you are in for a surprise.....every school (minus Brigham Young) is a party school; the ones you are looking at have their share of students/ party kids......

you should consider College of Charleston as well

Northeastern is so urban, I wouldn't think that is what you are looking for from what you have said. No real campus feel. Did you check out my suggestion regarding Goucher at all? Still seems like a good fit, potentially. But I hadn't thought about Miami and have to agree with the others that it could be an excellent choice.
