Well, i was totally sure that i was going to get into Howard University with a merit based scholarship. I have a cgpa of 3.7 and a 1500 on the new sat, even took the subject test (740 chemistry, 770 Mathematics Level 1), but to my greatest surprise, i got an email from them telling me they are unable to offer me admission. I’m really disappointed because i wrote the essays well and i have good stats and because my friends who had lower grades got in and SAT scores got in. This whole college application is just a way to make crush students. Although, i got the email by February callled the admissions officer who replied rudely, I still feel bad because now i have to take a gap year because i only applied to Howard
Are you an international?
Your post is a bit odd. People usually only apply to one school when they apply early and get accepted. Why did you only apply to one school? And why post this now at the end of April when this happened in Feb?
The college application process is not “just to crush students,” it’s the best way colleges can attempt to fill their campuses with students who will thrive there. I get that you’re sad and disappointed… but… if you “have” to take a gap year now because you only applied to one school, that indicates to me that you need to shift some of your attitudes and actions. Howard’s acceptance rate is only 49%. You should have had a back-up plan. I mean, be angry and bitter if you like, but it’s not going to move you forward at this point.
There are plenty of schools with rolling admissions you can likely still apply to and be accepted at. Perhaps – if Howard is the goal – you need to get yourself into one of those schools and work hard for a year and then transfer.
Are you international? That might be the reason its still a little strange considering your scores but anything is possible.
Unless admission and scholarships are guaranteed or if you get in and are assured of the financing you need under some kind of early/rolling plan, I don’t understand why you’d only apply to one school.
Yes i am
Yes i am
Well i am an international student, so i didnt really know much about the application deadline. I applied late December for the regular decison and got a decison by February 1. I’m posting now because i just found out about collegeconfidential

Explain this. To many African international students, we do not really know about this application stuff like you people. Most of my friends did the same thing i did, so it was like a group thing, they applied regular decision for fall 2017 and they got in with either the founders or the capstone scholarship. Even some of my friends with scores like 1290 and 3.5 gpa got in. And if it’s about, my essay trust me, i put in a lot of effort to make my application stand out. I didn’t know it would be like this eventually.
@benawo most state schools in the US are accepting applications until July for Fall '17 if you’re interested!
A 1500 is equivalent to an ACT score of 34 (someone correct me if I’m wrong) & that is a guaranteed scholarship to a ton of state schools!
Are you male or female?
It is… I am a male
Please examples of those schools
Here’s a link with a list of schools
Note that the application deadline of some of these schools have passed but some are also still open:

(If the link above does not work, type into google “guaranteed scholarships based on sat/act score”)
I know for sure that Lousiana State University and The University of Mississippi are still accepting applications. Email other schools to find out their deadlines.
What exactly is your intended major? If you don’t mind sharing, do you believe there were/are any red flags in your application?
Please make sure to submit your application to MULTIPLE schools & not just one…if you want to enroll somewhere by Fall '17.
OFF TOPIC -
If you don’t feel that any of the schools above or any of the schools on the list of the link will be a great fit for you, then you might want to consider a gap year.
Your SAT & SAT Subject Test Scores are also Ivy League competitive; most ivies will give you a full ride…ONLY IF you’re accepted.
To be competitive for the Fall '18 admissions cycle, (if you were to take a gap year) a gap year should be spent being very productive
Here is a list of ways you could spend a gap year:
