Well unfortunately I applied to four schools for January 2014 semester, the deadline to apply was in October and November. I want to transfer right after this semester because I am unhappy at my college and have been going to a community college for over a year. I want to go to a four year school as soon as I can. I got accepted to Umass Amherst and Saint Michael’s, and was rejected at Holy Cross and Colgate. I don’t think I would have a chance to get in Holy Cross if I apply again.

What other colleges do you suggest? I looked into Villanova, Providence, but I didn’t really love them when I visited though. I will give Umass a try. I will start in January, hoping for the best!!

I would do anything to go to Holy Cross. I loved everything about the school. I would pay every cent to go to Holy Cross.

I’m sorry. I know it hurts and there isn’t anything we can say to help a lot. I will tell you that my good friend’s son turned down Holy Cross for UMass Amherst. They gave him a merit award plus the lower cost made it just a better deal. Not worth the differential they decided. And they could have afforded it if they felt it was warrented. My husband’s colleague had his son go to a SUNY over Brandeis after going over the salient points. These are all very astute folks looking at factors that are important in choosing the colleges and they had the choice. Please do keep that in mind.

Wow it is hard to imagine that someone could turn down Holy Cross for Umass Amherst, but I think it is amazing. Maybe I can learn from this experience and that we can’t always get what we want. Thank you again for helping me out.

I have heard that Holy Cross’s academics are tough and that it requires lots of time to studying. Maybe it is a good idea to go to Umass and to enjoy life as a college student. Hopefully I can do well at Umass Amherst and to go to a top grad school. Hoping for the best!!

Having decided on UMass please immediately contact the disability office to arrange for your interpreters now before your classes start. I do not know if they use staff interpreters or contract interpreters but they will undoubtedly need to be scheduled in advance. Read their website for guidance on the issue.

I did like St Mike’s but I like Umass better because they have animal science major and St Mike is not really a science focused school like Holy Cross. I think it is too late to apply to the Honors college- I didn’t apply for it- I only applied through regular Umass admissions.

Do you think Umass will be a good experience? Is it easy to meet people at the school? I am just so scared, I am sorry- I have never lived in a dorm before. But I am excited about it.

I know someone who works in the disability office- she is willing to help me in any way she can. Thank you again!

Contact the disability office and the Honors college (read the thread above) and see if you can get in. If you have a full ride, you should meet the stats for honors college entrance. In addition, the honors dorms are much nicer and the rooms larger, so beside the academic benefits there are other perks. :)

I’m going to try to knock down the "dreamy’ aspect of Holy Cross just a wee bit, in hope it helps: Worcester is a undistinguished–some would day crummy–city. Amherst is a lovely college town.

There’s nothing to stop you from going to UMass for a couple years, nailing it, living in the comfort of that residency hall, and seeing if Holy Cross has any openings for your junior year. There’s a much better chance of the opening appearing in your junior year than in the spring semester after you first applied. HC doesn’t have any idea in November and December who’s not returning in spring from what would have been your class. There’s real advantages in not going into debt your first couple years of college because you’ll certainly have some debt when you get into HC. Chin up, Dude, this could work out nicely.
