Rejected but confused....

Just got spring semestered today, thought I had really good chance though I applied RD. I'm instate and applied for engineering (i know its competitive).

My stats are 4.0 GPA unweighted at a private school with a bunch of Aps and honors. 680, 680 SAT. Played JV and Varsity sports most seasons. A few honors and clubs and I thought I wrote a pretty good essay. Already accepted U of Mich engineering and waitlisted at Johns Hopkins engineering. Like I said I'm in state and thought I had a good chance. Anyone else confused by rejection?

They knew that they were your safety. I guess this year they want people who will actually attend.

So I know this doesn’t help much, I honestly have no idea why you were rejected, but a ton of friends who had excellent stats like yours were deferred last year too, I’m really sorry you got spring admit, i feel like sometimes theres just so many people, they start drawing the line higher and higher, CP has gotten so competitive recently. Though it seems like you have excellent other options, absolutely the best of luck!

For those people who were actually rejected, they’ll tell you that they’d much rather have a Spring Admission. It’s not the same thing.

You didn’t get rejected.

I know I did not get rejected but it feels like the same thing, lol. But, I actually would have proably gone to UMD because UMich is so much money out of state, and most likely cannot afford it.

the answer is quite simple: umd is much harder to get into after the priority deadline. you definitely would have been accepted if you applied by the earlier deadline instead of waiting

Its not necessarily us waiting. Mine is cause they lost my transcript and GC rec, and I got stuck in Spring semester.

My suggestion is take this by stride, find the silver lining. My friend had a 3.2 gpa and didn’t get in at all. It’s extra hard to get into UMD these days. If you have a community college nearby or anything like that, go for that. Just be happy you got in, and think of the people who didnt. That’s what I’m doing :)

Oh, sorry for the DP, but heres an interesting article.

[Daily Trojan - 500 appeal USC rejections, 32 admitted](http://www.dailytrojan.com/news/500-appeal-usc-rejections-32-admitted-1.218709)

Not sure if UMD does the same.

yh usually its harder getting into umd through RD than priority…
if you were to apply priority you would have definetely gotten in…
this is probably cliche but you snooze you lose lol srry…

Hey, it’s not so bad. I’m a freshman this year, and have met several people who were spring admits but got into fall. One of them put himself on a waitlist for a College Park Scholars program, and when a spot opened up, he moved straight from spring admit to scholars. If you want to go, then write a letter telling them that you want to go and you want to go in the FALL. Be more polite about it than that, but expressing your interest will do you loads of good, especially if you aren’t trying for too much financial aid. UMD’s had some budget cuts this year, so they might be a little more sensitive about that, and with your stats might not have wanted to give you full ride or mostly full ride. And honestly, I’m not just tring to give you false hope–there’s a pretty good chance you could get in for fall, if you start working on it now. Good luck!

hey! i’m in the same boat!!
i got spring semestered and my stats are about at the same level as yours. i also am pretty sure my “niche” was one of the greatest things i’ve ever written haha. i’m really upset about being “rejected”, actually. UMD is not my top choice, but i find it so strange that i didn’t get into the school where i KNOW that i qualify. honestly, i knew this kid last year who had about a 2.5 gpa, smoked weed every day of his life, pretty much lived around the theory that his life was just a figment of his imagination, and got in spring semester. can we really be compared to that level??

if i were you, i wouldn’t even care about umd because you have U Mich which has SUCH a strong engineering program. congrats on that! i’m so envious. i would choose U Mich over maryland ANYDAY.

just appeal, there are plenty of people who got in and won’t attend next fall. You have a really good chance.

Don’t worry. UMD admissions don’t make any sense. They throw out deferrals and rejections at random. I have a friend with a 3.2 overall gpa and mediocre SAT’s who got deferred till spring semester, and then another friend with a 3.7 GPA and above 1800 SAT’s who got rejected altogether.

Their admission decisions along with their scholarships make absolutely no sense.

I have also gotten into University of Michigan, and UMD still hasn’t gotten back to me on their decision. Who knows.

it depends, you should definitely appeal. Sometimes, your stats don’t match with what you provided or your counselor sent the wrong transcript or something. Who knows. If the admission office thinks you lied because your stats don’t match or there’s an error, they will reject. they don’t have time to dig through everyone and investigate. It’s your application so you should appeal.

Ok so I applied to UMD as a safety, mostly because my father felt that I did not have enough (only other was University of Delaware In-State, which I got into Honors), and I just saw that I was rejected. I did submit my app the last possible day and have shown absolutely no interest, but I felt I was still more than qualified. I am deciding between Brown and UVA (OOS) at the moment for next year. I could have understood getting accepted without any merit scholarships or special program placement, but would they really reject me just because they “assumed” I had possible better offers? I don’t mean to come across as elitist or anything, but its just so ironic that a student from the lower quartile of my class can brag about being accepted over a possible ivy-bound student.

Yeah I think they just ran out of room for regular decision applicants and I am gone to appeal it…

So, lets say you applied for smith – and you got spring admission. That’s an automatic no from smith right?

yh i was thinking the same thing GameDude…
they probably rejected alot of people with very high stats because they probably wanted to attract people who would really want to go to MD instead of choosing people that chose MD as they’re safety. But I’m finding that this is happening to alot of people everywhere! My friend has a 4.4 GPA 2250 SAT and was rejected to ALL the ivy leagues he applied to (brown, cornell, MIT, etc.) not even waitlisted! and was only excepted into umcp and umbc :frowning: my other friend has a 4.5 GPA and 2380 SAT!! and was rejected from umcp AND umbc!!..but my point is something is definetely going on with admission processes in alot of schools and I dont know what to think of it…
even with the banneker key scholarship, a guy in my school has a 3.5 GPA and a 1980 SAT and got a FULL ride to umd!!???
what the heck is going on… :(

They look at more than numbers at almost all schools now. Just saying two numbers gives no indication of who the applicant is.
