Hey, what is the process for appealing? appreciate it

For appealing, you need to write a cover letter explaining why you want your decision appealed, and then include various things that add to your application. That could be an updated resume, transcript, awards, anything of that sort. Mail that all in a packet.

Just to clear something upâŠUMCP does NOT reject applicants because âit thinks itâs your safety and you wonât attend.â CP, just like any other school, knows some students will not attend and accounts for this in the number of people it accepts. I had a 3.9 GPA and ~2300 SATs and was not rejected Nor was a friend who got into Harvard, or a friend who got into Columbia (the latter had a 4.0 GPA and 2300+ SAT). In fact, the Harvard boy was actually only given $1500 for two yearsâŠso it is not like they only accept those that they can afford to give big scholarships to to âentice.â We are all at our âsafety.â So, UMCP would never reject someone who was qualified because they are âtooâ qualified.

However, I do agree that they give out scholarships and whatnot seemingly at random. There doesnât seem to be much rhyme or reason to that, but admission and acceptance into honors/scholars is pretty straightforward. As far as scholarships go, they give much more hefty ones to minorities and those with more financial need (the two people I know on full rides+some are hispanic and black, respectively). So that can make the process seem more ârandomâ. Also, I truly believe they look at your chosen major and see if it corresponds to your skills demonstrated by your class grades/scores. Harvard boy was a trumpet prodigy but applied for business school. I was a writer with straight 800s on three sets of SAT reading and writing sections applying for the j school. So I got more money from him, even though Harvard would never accept me :P.

Chances are there was something wrong with your app. They may have lost a piece of it, your GC may have sent the wrong transcript, they may have sensed some kind of âfoul playâ or they may just have already filled their class by the time they got to you (esp. if you applied on the last day). Heck, maybe one of your teachers wrote something nasty in a rec. No doubt it may also have to do with applying after the priority deadline, since they accept something disgusting like 90+% of the class from that priority deadline pool. That combined with poor/rushed essays may have made them figure you just werenât worth it.

If you are seriously considering Maryland you should definitely appeal. With scores like that you belong in the Fall class. A good letter and an inquisitive phone call should make you a shoe-in. It will help to have a talk with your guidance counselor and have him/her phone also on your behalf. If you do well your first semester (and you should be able to get a 4.0 if you put good effort into your intro classes), you can easily apply to be in a special program, too, like honors (one of my friends was not accepted into honors but applied and got in with a 3.8 and minimal ECs). Otherwise, enjoy UMich :P.
