Rejected by Brown but Got In to HYP

Anyone rejected by Brown who was accepted by other Ivies?
My S was rejected but was accepted to Princeton and Columbia, wl at Harvard.

rejected from brown/harvard, into upenn

my friend was accepted to mit/harvard/yale but rejected at brown

shrek....Do they have any clue as to why that might have happened?

theyre nuts. theres one dude on another thread who was rejected from safeties (off the top of my head i remember babson, but he was rejected from lesser schools as well) and was accepted by harvard.

rejected at brown/penn

accepted at yale/gtown

Accepted: Georgetown, Berkeley

Rejected: Brown, Dartmouth, Penn

The Ivies just hate me, I guess. :(
Funny thing, though- for my friend it was pretty much exactly the opposite. Accepted at a bunch of Ivies, but rejected from Duke and Georgetown (unfortunately, her two top choices).

theory for these brown rejections: these individuals probably have academic strength in mathematics, something brown doesnt care a whole lot for.

An0nym0us5, what gives you the impression that Brown doesn't care for mathematical aptitude?

you should learn a little more about math at brown...both the math and applied math departments have some of the most accomplished faculty at the school. Brown also serves as the hub for undergraduate math in the country during the annual SUMS conference

http://www.math.brown.edu/
http://www.dam.brown.edu/

idk, just seemed like a very liberal artsy school to me. my cousin goes there, and shes very liberal artsy.

Well nevertheless, Brown does have a great math department, and they do care about the math department, unlike what you believe.

Aurojit

anonymous- that's definitely not true for me. My writing score was a 760, while math was a 700. I've always gotten As in English, and am in AP English, whereas there is a scattering of Bs among my math classes, and I opted out of AP calculus this year.

I'm going to call monday and ask them why I didn't get in- not to be bitter, but just for some constructive criticism. :)

:\ I can't imagine they'll give you a substantial answer. Probably just, "Oh, the applications were so competitive! We couldn't take everyone!" Good luck though.

It is true that many see us as being only a liberal arts school. The university is doing many things to attempt to shed this reputation among many in the public; one that I would say as a biology student is certainly untrue. We are starting a new tour that is specifically devoted to the sciences this month and many new faculty in the sciences are being hired!

A couple of years ago,my D was waitlisted at Brown but in at all other schools she applied to, including many supposedly more selective. Brown looks for a good fit (in their eyes, not the applicant's) and my thoughts are that she didn't come across as focused on a particular major/goal/plan, which might have hurt her. She had passions for several subjects, and while her achievements were impressive, they were all over the place. Maybe they saw that as a lack of muturity or seriousness, or that she mostly liked Brown because of it's lack of core.(partly true!) The school she attends likes kids who have broad backgrounds, and actually prefers that they don't have a set idea of exactly what they want to do when they get there, which fit her perfectly.
The girls I know who got into Brown were primarily science and math students, knew what they wanted to "be when they grow up" and also planned to do their sport at Brown, while she did not.
Just my theory, and probably had nothing to do with it.

She says, "It was probably the picture of my face." ;)

I go to a competitive high school that sends a lot of kids to ivy league schools every year, and it seems that brown only accepts those kids who are strong in math/science from our high school. this year there was a total of 6 of us rejected, and one waitlisted, all of us well qualified. I myself was rejected from brown but accepted to columbia.

why cant ppl just be happy about where they got accepted and not worry about why they didnt get accepted to another place..obviously u think hyp is awesome..so why even worry..gosh..

We're just trying to understand the craziness that is college admissions.

i was acepted to Dartmouth Berkeley Williams, yet waitlisted at Brown, but i probably am not a good fit to Brown so it makes sense

Hey, I got accepted to NYU, Brown, Northwestern, Stanford and Rice. Waitlisted to Columbia. Right now I am leaning towards Brown but am still quite unsure. Later in the month I am flying up for college visits to make a final decision. If anyone has any input though, I would greatly appreciate it. BTW I am the "Libral Artsy" type. :-)
