I was rejected by BU, not even wait-listed. I was a tad surprised to be honest. I didn't really plan on going to BU, but still, I was a bit disappointed at the rejection (I think anyone would be). I was deferred by Brown during the early decision round too...and my big colleges (Duke, Ivies), come out this week. A rejection from BU makes me a bit scared to see what will happen this Thursday. The school has a 37%~ acceptance rate, if I'm accurate. Can someone explain this situation? I don't mean to sound pompous or anything, I'm just a tad concerned. I have a 33 ACT and a 3.8 GPA, and a diverse amount of ECs.

You answered your own question.

@TomSrOfBoston , did they know that I wasn’t planning on going? I’ve also been admitted into UNC Chapel Hill. How could they have possibly known that I wasn’t planning on going?

My application was rejected too and was a tad surprised as well. Wasn’t considering the school anyway because BU is not the “traditional college” experience. I do know that BU puts a lot of weight on the “why BU?” prompt and they want kids that will attend BU. Maybe that’s where we didn’t show enough interest. But many factors go into the decision process and we can never be certain as to why the school didn’t accept our applications.

Did you show interest? Did you visit campus? Did you delete all their emails without reading them? Was your essay lackluster because you were sure you would be admitted based on your stats? etc.

Ah, I see. Maybe it was that essay, that’s what I was thinking earlier as well. @darkrum , they seemed to have rejected a lot of people. When I was reading the decision, it said something like “Out of the 54,000 applications we received, only 3,700 people got in.” If I’m not mistaken, that’s like a 7% acceptance rate…or was that just for RD?

No, the acceptance rate was 34%. 3700 is the size of the freshman class. BU has a low yield rate. Obviously, not everyone accepted chooses to attend.

Oh, I see. Thanks for your input everyone!

Looks like BU made the right choice in many cases where the applicants were more than qualified … Especially when they say they didn’t plan on going anyway! My D had very similar stats though … 33 ACT, 3.9 GPA and was accepted. Maybe it’s because she actually wants to go to BU?

Yes, they seem to place an emphasis on interest. I guess I didn’t quite have that. Oh well, it was a good experience applying :)
