Rejected?????? Doesn't make sense!

So a few weeks ago, I got my letter, and I guess I can say I got rejected? My first choise was PSU, with my second being Penn State Altoona, but I just don't get it? A lot of people with WAY lower stats than mine have gotten into Penn State University park, and it doesn't even make sense. I know the college process is weird and all, but we're talking about kids who had averages of 83-85% on a 100 scale, BAD SAT scores, little to no EC's, bad recommendation letters, and horrible essays? They've gotten in, and I haven't? =/

Me, on the other hand, my GPA is around 91 on a 100 scale, my personal statement was really good, and everything else was just way better. There are multiple threads on this section about this, so what do you think I should do?

Is there any way they can sort of wait-list me for University Park, after being accepted into Altoona, after calling them/contacting them, or something?

I sent my app in during the end of November/beginning of December?

Thanks

what school did you apply to and did you make the early action deadline? depneding on the school and if you apply after the early action deadline, its pretty hard to get into some of the schools

Unfortunately, there is a huge difference with PSU between an application sent in the end of November vs. beginning of December. I'm guessing your app ended up getting in after the November 30th first cut off. It can't hurt to call admissions and ask if you have any options, but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. I'm sorry, but if you look through these threads you'll see that you are not alone.

if you send in your application after the early deadline does it get transferred to the regular applications or put in a space available basis for admission for the early or what??

MICNY-my son also sent in his app in October, 90 average,1250SATS and was deferred to Altoona. I have heard that applicants from NY were plentiful, and Penn has a regional cut off of some kind, so if you are from NY this could be why, Also by the time we received the Altoona acceptance on Feb 1, housing at Altoona was full. So, thanks Penn for the acceptance for an OOS applicant with no housing available. Anyway, plenty of other good schools to chose from.

Sorry man. Not everyone can get accepted. The problem is that there are a lot more qualified applicants for Penn State main campus than there are spots. It has gotten a lot harder to get into University Park. There is already a waitlist, so they would have put you on that if you were in the range of getting accepted. I hope you get in at the rest of choices.

So it just looks to me like your application was submitted after Nov 30. Plain and simply all the alloted spots at UP may have been gone by then. Maybe the waitlist was of kids who applied before Nov 30th (I don't know). PSU claims they do not have any #'s in mind for out of state kids or regions. They strictly go by 2/3 gpa and 1/3 SAT. So if you got into Altoona they just see it as an acceptance not a rejection as you see it.

Sorry. You can always call. It can't hurt you. Good luck.

Sorry that you didn't make it into UP. Sounds like it was probably due to the late application.
But, I'm not sure I believe that kids with a 83 out of 100 and bad SAT scores are getting into UP. At our local high, the lowest numbers for kids accepted would be a 3.4 or 3.5 and about a 1250 on the SATs. Even higher for certain schools like Smeal, Engineering and Eberly.
That said, admission to UP is NOT especially difficult for kids who do moderately well in high school. You just HAVE to apply early to have a chance. I think more GCs need to communicate this to students....lots of kids get surprised every year. Applying early makes a HUGE difference. PSU is very popular and spots fill up quickly.
Good luck to you with your other choices. I agree with SAX that it doesn't hurt to make a call though.

As I have been saying, applications continue to grow. I am sorry that you did not get your application in earlier. I think you would have had a really good shot if you had. It is getting harder and harder as students from all over the country are applying.
