So I applied to about 10 schools (for CS) which include SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Binghamton, NEU, BU, Tufts, U of Rochester and GWU.
I got rejected by all of them except GWU who put me on their waitlist. I already sent a LOCI to them and showed kinds of interest, but the uncertainty worries me too much. My stats btw are: 92/100 GPA, 30 ACT and URM. Hopefully this is the right spot to post this.
Can you start at a community college and then transfer to a state university?
I am so sorry you are in this position. I know that the great posters here will have some suggestions. I believe Hofstra is taking applications. They have good merit aid and an honors college. I don’t know how good they are in CS, but I know they have the major.
@ucbalumnus is there some kind of guaranteed transfer option?
What state are you in? What’s the closest CC?
@gallentjill Sucks, I know. Hofstra sounds great, but the NPC is giving me something expensive.
@PurpleTitan Westchester, NY. The closest would be WCC.
Hmm

RPI also has a 2+2 transfer program with WCC (in to engineering):

@purpletitan excellent suggestions.
@PurpleTitan wow! Good finds. I like the sound of the RPI program. Do you think I’ll be missing out on the college experience or am I overthinking things?
Well, you’d still get some of the college experience. RPI isn’t a guaranteed transfer, I believe. Talk to a WCC guidance counselor.
If your grades translate to a 3.5 or higher GPA on a 4.0 scale, you may want to see if Tuskegee ( https://www.tuskegee.edu/programs-courses/scholarships/freshman-scholarships ) and Prairie View A&M ( https://www.pvamu.edu/faid/types-of-aid/scholarships/university-scholarships/ ) are still giving out full ride scholarships.
Ok, got it. I’ll do research later today. Thanks for the help.
You should be able to find some schools here
That is low cost and still is take in students
@ucbalumnus I appreciate your input, but I can’t go that far. I’m only allowed to be in the NE + Mid-Atlantic region.
@iminboiz
WCC is one good way to get there. Lots of kids here start out there.
When the list of colleges still taking apps comes out in early May, look it over and see if anything interests you. You can fine May deadlines for some apps still open here:
http://www.collegesimply.com/guides/application-deadlines/
Engineering programs are very tough and often have lower acceptance rates than the Uni as a whole. I’m sorry this happened to you.
The problem I see with Westchester Community College followed by a transfer to RPI is that when you get to RPI, you likely be less prepared than the existing RPI students and find it difficult to compete.
Why are you not allowed to be outside the NE+Mid Atlantic Region. That is the most competitive region, and you might want to re-think that.
There are some colleges whose application deadline has not passed. For good CS these are
Clemson (South Carolina)
SUNY New Paltz
UArizona
Arizona State
UIowa
Iowa State
University of Utah
Around May 1, a list of schools comes out that have available spaces. There are often excellent choices on that list.
Last year the list included
Iowa State University
Penn State
SUNY New Paltz
Truman State University
University of Maryland Baltimore County
University of Arizona
In the past, I’ve seen University of Pittsburgh on the list.
What is your budget for college?
What you should do is call schools above and find out which ones are still admitting for CS.
The engineering building at New Paltz is brand new and they are building an incubator lab building for projects. Gorgeous. Check it out.
Hofstra is actually a great suggestion. Also check out UMBC.
Can you list your classes in
Math
English/humanities
Foreign Lang
Science
Social science
Personal picks
(Including if they’re accelerated, honors, AP…)
Is your school underperforming? (For Westchester it’d be strange.)
Are you first gen or lower income?
Did you check that your GC uploaded your transcripts to the common app?
Have you had a discipline incident?
Can you PM me your essay?
Something’s off with you getting zero acceptance.
What’s your budget (what your parents can afford per year from once and savings)?
Why the geographical restrictions? That area is the most competitive. If you could include the Midwest and, say, Virginia, WV, NC, Mo you’d have a few more choices, even more so if you add the south.
In the meantime, depending on budget, apply to Penn State (IST major), UMBC, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Buffalo (undeclared??)
