If your family can afford to pay in full, there are many colleges yo can still enter in the fall that are not community colleges. Some are on the above list but feel free to contact second tier private colleges and ask. Many not on the list will still consider applicants.

In general, unless something changes dramatically by the time you apply, it’s unlikely that the colleges that rejected you will now accept you. With a 1950 you had unrealistic colleges on your list.

If you do take a gap year, I would suggest a whole new, more realistic list of colleges.

wow 44/45 IBD with 7’s in 4 HL math/science courses. that’s pretty impressive, i’m sure you can do better on the SAT’s if you retake them. you can take a gap year and do something you really like and reapply later, no problem with that. there are a lot of possibilities, you can go volunteer overseas, conduct research, start a small business, things you don’t usually have time for if you have school.
although, can’t you easily get into a top school in England with those IB scores?

As Omega suggests, whether or not you need FA is a huge consideration for many universities in the US. Undergrad institutions often designate less money for internationals. (Note: the Ivies are often an exception.)

If you want to attend a top US school, take a gap year. Don’t scramble to get into any school and hope to transfer. During your gap year, do something significant. Amazing. And get your SAT scores up.

Understand that the US has many, many excellent universities that you might not have heard of in Norway. If you cannot pay your own way, stay away from most public universities, as they put aside much less, if any, for international students. (They are funded in part by state taxpayers, which limits what they can do.) Research the possibilities on CC and on the web.

Although it is unlikely that you will be accepted at one of the schools that rejected you, even if you do something amazing during a gap year, go ahead and re-apply to your favorite one or two. You might get in. Most of your list should be composed of new schools.

Find a better range of schools. Visit the international students forum to discover which colleges are most international-friendly. Read the accepted students threads to see where others were accepted/denied, and what their qualifications were – and whether they needed aid.

Good luck! You can turn this around with careful planning and ambition.

I guess the discrepancies appear because of your SAT scores and application presentation and ECAs, strengthen them all and this year apply of both them and the safeties.

Take a gap year. While community college is a worthwhile institution-it is really hard to transfer. So spend your gap year volunteering with peace corps or what not- anything that boosts your AP. Then choose only three bor four ivies the year after and 3 or 4 safteies. You might have a better chance and get in to an ivy; but if you don’t at least you can go to a safety you love.

Right now I’m trying to make a new list of colleges like you guys suggested! Thanks!

@omega007: I didn’t apply for Financial aid…

@ adamonkey: thanks! I guess it didn’t add up to anything though in the end… I was hoping to go to university in US rather than UK that I didn’t apply last year. But this year I will apply to Oxford/Cambridge, Kings College, Imperial and a few others (safeties ^^) for medicine :D

@momwaitingfornew: thank you so much! you’re points were very insightful I really NEED advices right now!

Don’t know what part of the country you’re interested in, but down here in Louisiana, there are a couple of schools you can probably apply to and get in.

One is University of New Orleans. It is a very good commuter school, but offers on campus housing in apartments very cheap. I am sure you will be accepted. I doubt that the tuition for out of state is very high, and there is a very large international population.

Great engineering school, computer science, good premed, excellent education school. Also a good geology department.

UNO Technology Center houses many major corporations that hire UNO students as interns. Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grunmann.

Right on Lake Pontchartrain. Accessible to the Quarter and other scenic parts of New Orleans by bus. New Orleans is very cosmopolitan and you will fall in love with the city.

Okay, it’s not an Ivy, but you may be able to transfer to Tulane after a year if you’re looking for prestige. Try to get your foot in the door there while in town. Tulane loves internationals.

LOL u have a 1950— not even on the level for the colleges that u applied to ( u know this is true)
I don’t know much about your IB scores but i would suggest attending a CC
sorry to rub it in but you should’ve applied to atleast 1 safety school if ur SAT is sub 2000 and u r an international.
sucks but u have to pay for your actions

also there MIGHT be some colleges that are still accepting applicants ( mainly rolling ones i would assume)
don’t think about prestige when applying to these institutions

you had every reason to apply to prestigious schools…your grades are certainly in the realm of other top school applicants. i am truly sorry that you weren’t accepted.

i highly suggest taking a gap year. i took close to two years off from high school and i really believe that it was the wisest decision i’ve ever made. i would suggest finding an internship, doing research, working, and volunteering…volunteering abroad is huge, too. try to do all of the things that you didn’t have the chance to do when you were in high school so that you have the appeal of a perfectly balanced student–colleges LOVE that.

i’m currently enrolled at a community college, trying to boost my gpa (but it seems as though you don’t need that), but i’m planning on going to south east asia this spring to volunteer, travel, and experience another culture.

i’m a global studies major, but if you’re interested in the sciences or health, consider spending time in africa working on aids research or something of the like! you have so many options.

i’ve gotten the vibe that you’re interested in pre-med/chemistry/biology, so here are some colleges to consider:

upenn (in my hometown :))
boston college
cornell university
carnegie mellon university
johns hopkins univeristy
washington university
reed college
swarthmore college

One of my friends applied to three prestige universities only and got rejected from all of them. (He was someone with 3.2 GPA and lower SAT score than you) So he prepared a lot for a half a year (he didn’t go to a CC, he just prepared by himself) and applied again the next semester. He got in to Michigan Ann-Arbor (Major: Business which is REALLY good for his score, ECs and etc.)

Have hope! I am also an IB student and your IB grades are amazing!! :D

God…why on earth would you not apply to safeties especially with only a 1950? That under the middle 50 for lots of Ivies. I mean, God, even just applying to your state school would have been better.

Are you going to just take a “gap year” and reapply?
