At this point I'm so jaded over the whole process that I'm on the verge of breakdown. I guess I just want to know what I should do from here... I know rejection happens to everyone, especially to free, super selective summer programs that are harder to get into than college. But it hurts nonetheless. I'm beginning to think that there's an inherent flaw in the way I write. Do you think that's possible? I tend to be dreamy, surreal, and a bit naive in my essays, but that's simply my writing style. I believe in what I have to say, but perhaps it is too impractical for summer programs? I don't know. Anyways, I got rejected from TASP, a small summer scholars program, AAJA JCamp, and the Richard Louie Memorial Internship. Still waiting on Bank of America and applying to CIEE South Korea.

So far: rejected 4/6 = 0.67% rejection. LOL

Well TASP, you shouldn’t worried about. I don’t know much about Richard Louie or the small summer scholars program but what you need to consider is that there are many competitive applicants out there and that colleges have more spots for people. Hence, this should be a lesson to apply to several colleges and safeties in-case rejections happen. I’ve never heard of CIEE South Korea but BOA sounds like a great opportunity. You should be able to get into BOA as long as you don’t like in a too urban city where there might be an overwhelming amount of people applying. Don’t worry about it too much. Start looking for backups if you can… As soon as possible. Deadlines of most programs are approaching fast, so hurry!

If you think it might be your essays that are holding you back, give them to an objective person (preferably not a friend, more like a teacher or counselor) to look at? It’s hard to fight against a personal writing style, but maybe you can get some good tips on sharpening the “dreamy” a little bit.

Thanks, I’ll definitely take your advice into consideration. BoA is actually really competitive in my area, so I’m not too certain about that at this point. I suppose I can continue my current job and internship along with my current volunteering for the summer. It just feels a bit empty right now.

I don’t want to make my parents pay a ton for those dime a dozen summer schools. However, the vast majority of deadlines have already passed, so what else do you think I should do for plan b?

Your current job/internship, whatever it is, is certainly better than doing nothing. Many local professors at universities will let high school students intern at their labs over the summer, so you could look into that.

If you would like help on your essays, I will read them if you PM them to me.

Let us know how it works out! Good luck!

@AmaranthineD Thanks! You’re right, of course. And unfortunately I have a scientific/mathematics deficit in my brain so the usual lab interning doesn’t really apply to me. In any case, I feel a lot better about what I’m doing this summer now that I think about it. I’ll probably work on my applications and stuff :)

And I would love to pm you, but apparently I need 15 posts? I’ll start replying to random threads haha.
