Rejected from Cornell. Maybe I have better luck elsewhere?

@ Safe: How does not taking my freshman grades into consideration lower my rank? My rank is low BECAUSE of my freshman grades.

@ Blue: Yeah I realized that. =( But that better not be the reason since my sanity prevents me from committing suicide, regardless of how sad I am.

if you mention depression then they will hesitate to accept you because you wouldn’t look like a ‘star candidate’

they want people who are going to become millionaires and amous scientists at cornell, and when you tell them you are depressed, that gives them the impression you are not going to succeed by their standards

just throwing that out there, not sure if im right but its my opinion

Just FYI, my essay is about how I overcame the problems that depression had caused me and the person I am now, who has much ambition.

Anyone else?

SATs are solid, avoid mentioning the ‘3’ you got on that macroeconomics test if you can (don’t try deliberately to hide it, though), and take a look at your family tree to see if you have ANY Caucasian in you so that you can put down that you are white, because Ivy Leagues discriminate like hell against Asian folk. Overblow any leadership rolls you have ever had in any clubs, and you need to take one more subject test, because the last time I heard, Princeton requires three (but those two 800s are nice and shiny next to that 2300). About the depression: a lot of smart persons overcome depression in middle school. I did. It’s not uncommon, and that alone (not even mentioning the mental instability factor) should mean that you don’t write an essay about it. But, you’re already changing it, so that’s good.

Also, do you play an instrument, or do a sport outside of school? You can put any one of those down in your activities section, to make you stand out from other Asians, if you don’t feel like misleading the school about your race.

Do all this, and you will have a better chance of getting into Princeton, but please note that Ivy Leagues are, as someone else so finely put it, “a crapshoot.” Good luck!

What I meant was that Cornell are likely to be more cautious than another school without that reputation, not that you in particular are a risk. It’s a risk for them to admit anyone who has/had depression because it has the potential to have a more significant impact on them and their reputation than another school.

I’m glad to hear you’ve overcome your depression and I really hope you get in where you want to go. :)

Edit: Just to confirm what the poster above me said, I’m another person who overcame depression in middle school. Obviously it impacted your grades in your freshman year so you may want to get your counsellor to mention it in their recommendation and how you’ve overcome it and use your essay to show the person you’ve become now without mentioning the depression.

Thanks for the responses.

@Week: I’m 100% Asian and Princeton dropped its 3 subject test requirement a few years ago. I believe it only looks at the two highest scores, but I also have a 740 on US History if that matters.

Bump.

Also:

Hey fellow homo sapiens,

I do have other colleges on my list besides Princeton ya know.

halppppppp me

If you look but do not respond, a black hole will eat you tomorrow.

If you are not top 10 percent, getting into an ivy league school is impossible. If you aren’t top 10 percent, the only way you can get into an ivy league school is if you are a URM, athlete, or you went to an elite new england private boarding school (these private boarding schools send like 50 percent of its graduating class to the ivy league, so if you aren’t top 10 percent at these schools its understandable. Almost all ivy league adcoms easily recognize these elite boarding schools).

@ZooeyKing: thanks.

@Colleges: Please do not spurt nonsense. I do not deny that my chances for an Ivy school is near 0, but “impossible” is clearly the wrong word to use. Ivy schools have admitted non-hooked students who were not in the top 10% of their class, although it is rare. And if being in the top 10% is a requirement for non-hooked students, the schools would’ve said so. Kthnxbai.

I would encourage you to apply at Grinnell. They don’t include freshman grades in calculating your GPA. They have their own observatory, which is way cool. And the small, rural campus, has a strong quirky, intellectual, unpretentious culture where students look out for, and support each other. They also offer great financial and merit aid, have state-of-the-art facilities, no distribution requirements, small classes (none bigger than 25 students) and amazing faculty mentoring. Excellent food too!

Thanks. Does Grinnell have a good Astronomy program? Even though it has its own observatory, I prefer to go to a medium-large school that’s in or near a city, unless Grinnell has a really good Astronomy program.
