I’m so scared I’ve only got accepted into 2 schools and they were significantly easy to get into. I applied to U temple and I actuall wanted to go there and got rejected and its not that my gpa was low . I have a 3.3 GPa unweighted and weighted it’s like a 3.7 … I got a 25 on my act and people said I had a good chance of getting in. I thought my resume was pretty good because I’m a well rounded person ( i finished my girls scout gold award and im an african american stand up bassist ). I honestly I feel like crying. I don’t get it at all I already got rejected to ANOTHEr school which I was expecting but now I don’t think I’ll get into any schools like I had all the requirments for temple. Im so dissapointed in myself . Idk what to do.??? My friend told me that colleges see the schools you applied to and if they think have a feeling you have a lack of intetrst they they’ll reject you, I got defered from another school bc of " lack of interest". My black friend last year had amazing grades almost perfect sat score great extracurriculars and NYU rejected her and I was confused but I asked someone and she said, because overqualification. Now I feel like I won’t get into any of the schools i applied. What R UR grades of the ppl who got into temple? Or why do U think I got rejected? People said bc low gpa but temple is a holistic school and they DO NOT just look at grades. So…please help!
Also take in mind my gpa isn’t the highest but ALL throughout hs I’ve taken honors courses/ APs and challenged myself( even tho I have ADHD…which colleges don’t know about bc my mom was afraid it’ll effect me if they knew about my disability.)
^ also forgot to mention like, the first quarter of my senior year I did really well… I’m majoring in accounting and im takinf a college course of accounting through the school and get college credits(3) and I got a 100 in it so… I just don’t get it
If you look at the GPA/SAT graph of Temple, it looks like you would have had a chance to get in but were really on the border.

But also, if you look into the Common Data Set for Temple, they consider other things like ECs and interest and what state you live in, etc.
http://temple.edu/sites/temple/files/uploads/documents/Common_Data_Set_2013-2014.pdf
Do you know what interest is? What did you do to show interest? Did you visit the school? Did you sign up for emails? Did you read emails and click links in the emails that they sent you? Did you have an interview if they do that?
What were your extra curriculars?
Do you live in Pennsylvania?
Do you write better in your essay than you did in your post?
Do you need financial aid? If you don’t live in PA (Temple is a Public U) then they may be looking for higher GPA. They may want out of state students to pay more.
But at this point maybe you talk to your Guidance Counselor or parents. Ask if the colleges you have been accepted to are appropriate for you or should you apply to others that still allow applicants. Start visiting and looking at the colleges that you have been accepted into and see which one is better for you. If you are a good student, you rise to the top.
Overqualification usually does not get you rejected, but rather, waitlisted.
Im an african american varsity swimmer, I taught disabled kids to swim,I did so much volunteer work it wasn’t funny lol like my GS project was 80 hours that helped ronald McDonald house. There’s honestly a whole list, List can go on. And no I did nothing to show my interest and I think that’s why. No my grades aren’t great but my extra curriculars make me stand out. And lol yes my essay is ALOT better than how im writing trust me my english teachers liked my essay a lot. No im not a penn resident Im in ny and yes I wud need fincial aid.
Being out of state is probably your problem. Temple is a state school. They are less likely to accept lower (for them) stat students for out of state. Also, colleges want to accept people that will attend. If you don’t show interest, they think it is less likely that you will actually matriculate.
Also check on http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/temple-university/
It is also possible that they didn’t accept you because of your financial need. Say (I’m making up numbers for arguments sake), Temple’s Cost of Attendance is $30,000. If your financial aid information demonstrated that you have an EFC of $0, Temple would see that you can’t afford it. As a state school, they are required to give preference to in state students, and they do not meet full financial need, they are also probably need aware. As such, they knew you wouldn’t be able to afford that $30,000 gap, and saw no reason to accept you. Sad, but possibly true.
^ I don’t need that much fincial aid lol im not poor but I have a large family so THAS why I need finical aid bc my brother already goes to college.
Regardless, there’s no use in being upset over it now, you have to let it go and move on. You’ve been accepted to some schools already, I’m sure you’ll be happy at one of those. And if not, look into going to community college for a year or two and transferring. There’s nothing else you can do.
Well the only reason why I’m upset is bc now I probably won’t get into a bunch of schools like if they didn’t accept me then I guess a bunch will? I wasn’t gonna go to temple anyway tbh
I guess a bunch wont*** not will^^
“No my grades aren’t great but my extra curriculars make me stand out.” Great ECs only matter for very selective schools where tons of ppl come in with almost universally high GPAs and test scores.
The fact is that all colleges are first and foremost, institutions of learning. If your GPA and test scores are out of their typical range of accepted freshmen – unless you’re a recruited athlete, your ECs won’t matter one bit. this is a huge myth and a fallacy held by many HS students. Interesting ECs matter when you can only give one spot to two 2200 SAT kids.
Interesting ECs don’t matter to a public school that accepts 65% of applicants based on a logarithm of your transcript and test scores. Temple obviously looked at grades more than you thought.
This, combined with needing FinAid – probably was your undoing. Best of luck to you. I hope you find a great college home for this upcoming Fall.
^ but temple is a HOLLISTIC SCHOOL they said they rather someone with so so grades and amazing EC rather than someone with good great and ok ecs
@Jojo4975 Google the common data set for temple (http://temple.edu/sites/temple/files/uploads/documents/Common_Data_Set_2013-2014.pdf) and go to page 7. Rigor and GPA are very important, test scores are important, and everything else is just considered. This means that your grades and test scores serve as the bulk of their decision.
I guess you’re right. They admitted 65% of applicants only denying 35% and I’m One of them. Which schools do you think I have a chance at? Now I feel like I won’t get into any colleges. I’m applying as business major so list any schools that I am elgible for
Chill out (no offense) - you’ve received two rejections, that doesn’t mean that you won’t get into the other schools you applied to. Stop jumping to conclusions - all you can do now is wait for your other results.
If you’re honestly serious about applying to more schools, you’re probably too late for most of them - unless you’re willing to wait for a year, or if you can find one with rolling admissions.
Also, you yourself said you wouldn’t go to Temple. So why are you mad? You gave up your spot to someone who’s dream is to go to Temple.
What schools are you still waiting on? What schools admitted you?
Here’s a list of colleges that would admit you (some with likely merit aid) and have March 1 deadlines:
**Matches
NJIT
Rowan
Randolph-Macon
SUNY Albany
SUNY New Paltz
UScranton
Washington&Jefferson
Capital (OH)
Penn State Erie, Altoona, Harrisburg
**Safeties
Lycoming
Manhattanville
Monmouth
Moravian
Duquesne
WVU
Seton Hill
Penn State Greater Allegheny
A lot of these are on the CommonApp so they’d be easy to apply to, and a few that aren’t (SUNYs, Penn State’s, WVU) have easy applications.
