Rejected from UC Berkeley but....

Hey Everyone!
I just got rejected from Cal but they are offering me the Bobcat to Bear Transfer Option where they guarantee admission into Cal if I go through 2 years at UC Merced first. Does everybody get this along with their rejection? And do you think this would be a good route to take?

wow i got accepted, you really wanted to go to berkeley?

Not I, my friend.

Just a straight up rejection… Did you see this noted at your my Berkeley page?

Yeah…it was on the myBerkeley page…
Actually, I was all geared up to go to UC Santa Barbara (since I got rejected from UCD and UCI)…but then this transfer thing from Cal came up and I’m reconsidering…

Bump :P…
anyone else get this in their reject letters???

Bump…anyone??

I’d rather just go to Community College and transfer into Berkeley. It’s not going to be an easy transfer going from Merced to Berkeley since you will miss all those friends you had.

i didnt get it. just got flat out rejected.

you will only get the merced berkeley transfer option if you applied to merced

^Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

God, I would so take that option. I just got rejected from Berkeley, and I would go through Merced to go to Berkeley in a heartbeat.

Wish I’d gotten that option. straight up rejection for me.

100% Transfer acceptance? That’s better than the CC option!

Hmm, personally, being a current Cal bear (finishing up freshman year), I would say do it! I can’t imagine a better University to be at. To everyone who got rejected, I say appeal!! Last year, when I applied, I was rejected as well. My drama teacher suggested I appeal their decision, but I didn’t want to do it at ALL. I was angry because they turned me down and didn’t feel like wasting my time, but my mom talked me into it. Look at it this way: what do you have to lose? If I hadn’t appealed, I wouldn’t be here now. If Berkeley is somewhere you REALLY want to be, I say give it a try!

jenben, mind explaining what you included in your appeal? Did you have a lot of new info to add and letters of rec?

To flipstorm: I compiled a packet consisting of letters of recommendation from teachers at my school, my employer, and my school counselor. You can also add some from your family, if you wish. My mother included a personal letter with my appeal. It depends on how you wish to angle it. I touched on the flaws within my essay and strengthened them in my appeal by outlining exactly where I went wrong in the presentation of myself, a bit more of what I had to go through in high school while keeping my grades together, and then tied it together nicely at the end with a few quotes from prominent people (MLK, specifically). I made sure that the part where I elaborated on the flaws within my essay was cohesive and it was about a page and a half. I did have a lot of new information to add to my appeal packet, though. I don’t know why I didn’t write about it in the first place. I guess I just got too caught up in fear of having only 2 essays to present myself to a board of random people. Hope this helps!

I too got rejected from Berkeley, but personally I would not have went there anyway. Too big and too expensive for me. I think I’d stick with Pomona or Williams.

Thanks JenBen. I don’t have too much new stuff (just a couple EC’s I forgot to add really) but I’m gonna elaborate a lot more on what I only hinted on in my essays so hopefully it works. I was afraid of going “TMI” in my essays but don’t really care now lol. Only gonna have like 1 teacher recommendation though because I’ve never been real close to any of my teachers.

Hi JenBen I am pretty much in the same situation you were in and would like a little advice, in terms of what your wrote in your appeal. I know you said you tried to hit the points you do not believe you hit in your initial application submission, but what else did this include, I am just really bummed and would like all the advice I can get. Thanks.

To Razzo:
I also got rejected from Berkeley an was granted the Bobcat to Bear opportunity. I’m definitely gonna go through with it and I hope to see you there. :]

It’s a good deal if you’re really going to use your Berkeley education wisely :)

A friend of mine went to Berkeley as a junior transfer after community college, and really did wonderful things when he was there. The nice thing is that a lot of your early requirements may not be particularly better conducted at Cal than at Merced, so you could come to Cal just for the upper level courses and get much of the juiciest part out of it anyway.
