Rejected from UCB, but still got Fin. Aid. Award?

So yeah...I was rejected from Berkeley, but they still sent me my official financial award notification. Is this just standard operating procedure?

Here’s a fuzzy snapshot of what I received in the mail. Just wondering if everyone else who was rejected got this same package. Looks so official…especially with the whole “You must maintain your grades”, as well as it saying “financial aid notification found in this letter represents a careful and thorough review of your application materials.” Anyways, I’m sure it’s just a tease lol… /sigh

that is really unusual. I would definitely call admissions and see what happened, they might have made a mistake in your admissions decisions. good luck =)

How strange, definitely give them a call.

Guess I’ll have to wait till tomorrow to call since it’s Sunday. I think it’s most likely just a mistake though. Besides, I already submitted my SIR to UCSD :)

Umm financial aid office makes decisions independantly of the admissions office.

It is not odd that you received your financial aid package.

Malishka,
f/a uses the admissions decisions to make the offer package. Thats why I knew last year when I received an early email from f/a that I was accepted and why my husband knew this year when he received his f/a paperwork early that he was accepted. Even though they are separate departments the f/a department gets a list of all accepted applicants in order to put together the f/a package, otherwise 67k f/a packages would have gone out.

Am I the only rejectee that got this aid package in the mail? Speak up if the same thing happened to you!

Well, I just called. Their response was, “Everyone got one.”

Wow. Tax dollars at work again? I would have expected better from Berkeley. I wonder what the rationale for that is.

you mean to tell me they sent out 67,000 f/a awards?? I’m going to ask one of my friends about that, she works in the f/a office at Berkeley. That sounds strange.

Yeah…the person who answered didn’t seem like he wanted to help. I could tell by the tone of his voice that I wouldn’t get any further even if I asked more questions.

well, I was rejected from Cal and I haven’t gotten a finaid package…that seems really odd…

Call them back and ask to speak to a f/a supervisor… I just talked to one of my friends, they do not send f/a awards to everyone who applied to Cal. too costly and a waste of time.

Its not everyone who applied- at a certain point they do send them out to the majority of lets say undecided on applicants because some have already been decided.

It is not just for people who got accepted, i am pretty certain that you can get f/a and still be rejected.

That doesn’t make any sense to me. Why would they bother doing a financial aid package for someone who has not been accepted? Do they enjoy doing useless work for thousands of people?

No- it is about time frame. People that have been accepted need the packages.

Also, it is not as if someone hand reviews each and every package, a lot of them are computer generated.

In most cases provisional letters go out, but in some other cases, they can get the actual award letter if one was made, even though they did not get accepted. I am not trying to say that tens of thousands of letters go out, i am just saying that it can happen and it doesnt seem that odd at all.
