Hello! I got an invitation to apply to the honors program after I was admitted. I did so as soon as I was able to and recently got a rejection from them. I was obviously disheartened because I told myself that if I were accepted to honors, it would rise drastically on my list.

So this is my question... since I was denied admissions from honors, is it likely that ross will not pre-admit me as well? I have a 32 ACT and a high GPA (I am reluctant to share it because I do not go to your typical high school). I think the non objective part of my app is more impressive... ECs, recommendations, etc (and I am thinking honors focuses more on the numbers). So I am not asking about my chances at ross pre-admit. I am asking if not getting into honors means my chances have decreased for ross pre-admit (because they see i was rejected, because it is statistically rare for a honors rejectee to be pre-admitted, or whatever else the reason may be).

Furthermore, do honors rejectees often still end up at highly selective schools? I'm applying to schools such as Penn, Georgetown, Cornell, UChicago, etc. I guess this boils down to how selective is the honors program...?

i really don’t think it has to do with numbers as much as it had to do with your essay. although i had a higher act score (34) i had a pretty mediocore gpa (~3.6) but i got admitted. i was really surprised that i got admitted because of my gpa. to be honest, if the honors app is really dependent on the essay, it shouldn’t mess with your chances as a pre-admit to ross. soooo imo, honors = crapshoot, ross = another game altogether good luck !!

oh plus, i didn’t get invited to the honors program because of my gpa. another indicator imo that it doesn’t really have to do with numbers after a certain threshold.

Yes lollipop, only 15% of LSA students are Honors, while 50%-70% of LSA students are good enough to be admitted into schools like Chicago, Cornell, Georgetown and Penn. I would not worry about it. Honors student in LSA have similar stats as the average students at Harvard (typically top 1% of their high school class, mid 50% SAT of 1440-1560, average unweighed GPA of 3.9, excellent writing skills, highly significant ECs etc…

I’ve posted the admissions and selectivity info from the Umich Honors Q&A before, so I won’t quote it verbatim here again. But the rough numbers are that that the Honors program invites what they think will be the top ten percent of the admitted class (as stated on the website, ~1500 people), and then accept about 30% of all people who end up applying to the honors program (both invited people and people who apply without invitations), ~500 people, or 10% of the matriculating class.

In addendum, I have heard that proportion of Honors to Regular LSA students last year was 1/11. If anything, that ratio should rise with this year’s switch to the common app.

A note about the Honors admissions process: you were sent an invitation because of your high GPA and test score. However, as I believe they explain in the invitation, the Honors applications committee, which is separate from the regular LSA admissions committee, reviews your ENTIRE UMICH APPLICATION again, not just your test scores and gpa, and not just your honors essay. That being said, we see that it is as hard to pinpoint a reason for rejection from Honors as it is to pinpoint a rejection from the University proper.

Eziamm’s comment is the most accurate:

“Being rejected from honors means you didn’t get into honors. Everything else is completely different and has a completely different committee.”

Oh and about scores being high enough, I didn’t get into honors either even though my scores were pretty solid. I did apply after the suggested deadline, so maybe that played a part, but in honors I think the essay matter a lot

Just got my honors acceptance e-mail!!! yayyyy!

and you have to apply by april but they recommend applying as early as possible. i advise it as well, as i heard in less than 2 weeks after i submitted my essay!
