Does it hurt your chances if you were rejected out of high school and is applying as a transfer? Do they look at your previous application?
I'm applying to Yale as a transfer at the end of the year.

They do ask if you applied before, but they don't keep old applications (you have to send everything again), so they won't be looking at your freshman application. However, as a soph transfer, you will be evaluated mainly on the same factors that were taken under consideration when you applied as a freshman, because you will have only completed one sem/qt of college by the time you apply. In addition, Yale's acceptance rate is considerably lower for transfers than for freshman admissions, about 4%.

Since your application is considered on its merits, your previous rejection does not, theoretically, affect your chances of admission. But, practically, since you "is applying as a transfer", you may as well get rejected again.

Though they won't have your old app, the fact that you were rejected last year will hurt your chances:

Yale Daily News - Some see second shot in transfers

"...Yale College Dean of Admissions Jeffrey Brenzel said Yales policy does not encourage students who were previously rejected to reapply for admission."

I was rejected by Cornell while in high school....nowhere on my transfer app did they ask if I'd applied before. Then again...this was before Cornell switched to the Common App.

Anyway...I was accepted for transfer and just graduated in May :-) So...I think with the exception of a select few institutions...you won't be negatively impacted by a rejection in high school...so long as your college performance shows academic achievement.

Depends on the school. Some schools ask if you have ever applied before or not. Many times that shows the admin committee your willingness to keep trying to get to that institution and your commitment to your goals. Some schools hold onto previous applications - ND does. BC for instance does not -

The fact that you applied out of HS and were rejected is not detrimental to your chances at getting in as a transfer. Though yale has such a low acceptance rate, it is very easy to transfer into a top caliber institution assuming you represent yourself correctly on the app and essays and do well in the classroom regardless of being denied as a frosh or not.

I applied as a frosh and transfer to Notre Dame and was denied both times (B in physics my frosh year, only grade not an A) - but i applied to Georgetown out of hs, denied, and after frosh year and was accepted - so you never know - depict a compelling reason for transfer and you are just giving yourself a better shot.

snwrider, the OP is asking about Yale, thus my Yale specific answer. I know this from experience as my D applied applied as a freshman and as a soph transfer.

Does being accepted out of high school help transfer chances?
