Hello,
I am in quite the pickle right now. Last year, I took an online class at a community college far away from my current high school because representatives from the college advertised the course. However, mid-semester, I decided to drop the course and sought out guidance from my high school counselors on how to do so. Unfortunately, the community college system was different than what they were used to and we both got confused on how to properly drop the class, but I thought we had successfully done so after a message popped up confirming the drop. However, when I checked today, not only is the course on my college transcript, it shows I have received an F in the class. The class is not an a-g course, but I know I will have to send an official college transcript to the UCs and other schools I am applying to. I know I was responsible for not double checking whether the course was successfully dropped, so I reached out to the community college counselors for possible options. I am able to retake the class in the spring semester for a grade change, but how will this affect my chances for the UCs and California privates such as Stanford and Pomona? I am enrolled to take the class in the spring and I know I will get an A in the class, but I’m at a loss right now. Any advice would be helpful!
I forgot to mention that I am valedictorian of my graduating class with a 4.77 weighted and 3.98 unweighted. I also have a 36 ACT but I’m really worried this one mistake will jeopardize my college admissions.
It is what it is. That would be but one of thousands of excuses these admissions people can use to deny an application. Stanford rejects 95% of the applications they get, so it mostly comes down to dumb luck. You’re as strong as any applicant they have.
@coolguy40 While luck is involved, saying it comes down mostly to “dumb luck” is an exaggeration.
The class is not an a-g course,
→ If the college class is non a-g (ie, not transferable), don’t worry about it. It’s like high school PE or health class.
but I know I will have to send an official college transcript to the UCs and other schools
→ Did you list this failed class & college name under Colleges Attended and College Courses taken while in high school section? If not, don’t bother sending this college’s transcript. If you did list it, email UC that was a mistake.

Should freshman applicants enter all courses taken or only those that are on their school’s UC-certified course list?
Students must enter courses that appear on their school’s UC-certified course list. Students who have attended more than one high school must list courses taken from each school. Transferable college/university courses and/or college/university courses that meet an A-G requirement must also be listed. Students can list non-A-G courses in the appropriate section of the Activities and Awards portion of the application.
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for your advice. @ctl9ln I didn’t list the course under college coursework but under the activities section and explained the circumstances in additional information. I have updated all of my schools about this situation because I’d rather be truthful and be rejected than be accepted through deceit. I will keep everyone updated on how this college cycle goes and I will definitely never make the same mistake again.
Also I took a introduction to business class at my high school the same year (it was the main reason why I wanted to drop the college class) and earned an A both semesters. At this point, it is what it is and I am retaking the class in the spring! Thank you everyone again for your help!
