Rejected...Space Availability

I had already checked the website and it listed me as rejected, but I still wanted to find out exactly what the reason had been.

I had moved in April, and submitted my change of address form, but it still took forever to finally receive my formal rejection letter.

The rejection doesn't hurt so bad, since I was accepted to my number 1 school. This school was actually at the bottom of my list.

Simply put, "you've met all of our admissions criteria, we unfortunately don't have a seat for you in our program".

lol

That's what they all say. We regret to inform you that because we could only admit a very small number of applicants, we could not offer you a spot.... you were one of the many qualified applicants that we wished we could admit, but alas, the limited space...

That's the form letter. But you don't know if you were the person who almost got in, or the person who was laughed out of the first round. Everyone gets the same letter.

Since you got into your 1st choice, you were no doubt qualified -- but the letters don't mean anything. They send the same thing to everyone.

It was a different grad program.

My rejection letter did list the number of applicants, but not the number of available seats. I would love to know what that number is, or how many weren't even in the running.

I do know there are many applicants who already have an advanced degree. Which still shocks me. When I met with one of my professors, to ask for a letter of recommendation, she was kind enough to talk to me at length regarding her experience and what I could expect.

I had already known there are many people who become PhD candidates and only end up with a master's degree. And then there are professional students.

You got in to your 1st choice - congrats! Move on and don't worry about the rejection. It's their loss, right?
Sometimes individual professors simply choose the people they want to work with from a qualified pool and those are the ones that get accepted. Finicky, but that's how some things are...
