Rejected/Waitlisted to Nearly Every School?

I recently got my college results out. Only to see that every single college has either waitlisted or rejected me. The only two that have accepted me are my backup colleges and I applied those through early action.

So what should I do now? Should I transfer after my first year? Or should I stay in my backup school and try to get a high GPA to get into a good graduate school?

Here is a brief rundown of my stats:
GPA: 4.0 (unweighted) (101.258%)
Rank: 13 of 741
ACT: 35
AP Classes: APES (5), APHG (5), WHAP (5), AP Biology (5), AP Physics 1 (4), APUSH (5), AP BC Calculus (5)
Senior Course Load: AP European History, AP Language and Composition, AP Statistics, AP Chemistry, AP Government, AP Macroeconomics, Internship
Volunteer hours: ~500
Clubs: NHS, Beta, National English Honor Society, French Honor Society (Officer), ChickfilA Leader Academy
Extracurriculars: Archery, Head Tutor at school tutoring program, Research at Emory University, Intern with local doctor, Created the first annual International Night, Created the first annual Korean Night
Awards: The usual AP awards, National Merit Finalist, UGA Merit Award, some small school awards

Can you share which schools you are considering as your safety schools that you were admitted to as most have gone to other than the most selective schools and achieved great things!

As someone who was in your shoes 12 years ago

Write a waitlist letter to your waitlist schools, declaring your #1 choice as the school you will matriculate to if accepted. Mail those off and then go buy a t-shirt from the school you’re going to commit to and give yourself 100% to that school. If in mid may or june you get a nice surprise then awesome. Otherwise enjoy your 4 years wherever you’re headed.

@Chembiodad
I applied to

UGA (accepted) - Backup
GA Tech (accepted) - Backup
Johns Hopkins (Waitlisted) - Also my dream school
Rice - Waitlisted
Vanderbilt - Waitlisted
WUSTL - Denied
Emory - Denied
Yale - Denied
Brown - Denied
Duke - Denied

Congratulations on being accepted to UGA and GT! UGA had a record number of applications, and GT is one of the best engineering schools in the country. Good luck with your waitlists. If they don’t work out, I hope you embrace your opportunity to go to a great school. You will be surrounded by some amazing people–students, professors, and staff. Be positive and take advantage of all the school offers. Treat others with respect and kindness. You will do great. Good luck!

@rika0323, my twin DD’s feel your pain as they had similar stats, profile and were;

Denied at Amherst, Bowdoin, Brown, Cornell, Dartmouth, Swarthmore and Williams
Waitlisted at Middlebury, ND and Wesleyan
Accepted at Bates, Carleton, Colby, Colgate, Hamilton, Kenyon and Oberlin

DD1 is interested in History, Poli Sci and IR, DD2 interested in Bio and Neuroscience

They did end up with some great choices, but it’s tough out there.

Hey I am in your shoes too! I’ve gotten rejected/waitlisted to nealrly every school. I had a 34 ACT and 4.5 WGPA. I was in the top 5%. I thought I’d at least get into one selective school. It’s super painful

For STEM GATech is better than most of the schools that rejected/waitlisted you.

huh, it seems to be a very tough year for unhooked students. several friends of mine got many rejects/WLs too.

GaTech is very good.

I put in in another thread:

"BTW, to any juniors reading: Even if you have stellar stats and ECs, unless you are hooked or are nationally/globally renown in something or the kid of someone rich/famous or insanely good at essays, expect to be denied/WL’ed from more Ivies/equivalents than you are admitted to.

Those single-digit admit rates apply to you as well."

And yes, some would be denied to all.

And finally, yes, for STEM, GTech is pretty darn reputable. You can try to get off a WL, but from a ROI perspective, the in-state schools may actually still be your best options.

GA Tech is amazing!! Don’t worry about your rejections/waitlists. Send letters if you really want to go to JHU, etc., but you should feel happy even if you “only” go to GT (:

Agree…GATech is an amazing acceptance and you can only attend one college so IMO you are in great shape!
