Got a great rec from Bob Kerry as well as my supervisor at the New School.

Awesome rec from TA at Columbia (talks about my interest and knowledge in electronics)

Also got reccomendations from my Physics, Chemistry, and U.S. History teachers.

what killed me was that they checked 1st quarter grades and i had one C. (my guidance counselor stated that I was sick in my midyear)

This is how my midyear report stacks up (1st quarter/second quarter/ midterm exam/overall):

AP Calc BC- C/A/A/B

AP Economics B/A/A/B
AP English B/B/B/B

Here's my list of schools:

Cornell Engineering (deferred early decision)
Columbia SEAS
Upenn
Princeton
Brown
Carnegie Mellon (CIT)
Johns Hopkins

Please rate my chances. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

Don't feel too bad. MIT is one of THE most selective schools in the country. They reject applicants such as yourself all the time.

Cornell: You were deferred...

Columbia: A bit of a reach (lower GPA)

UPenn: Bigger reach (lower GPA)

Princeton: Biggest reach (lower GPA)

Brown: A bit of a reach (lower GPA)

Carnegie Mellon: Match

Johns Hopkins: Match

thanks+ten char

you got defered by cornell? scratches head..... they probably defered you b/c they thought you were too good, and don't want to give you admission right away, since you are going to reject them anyway. I think you'll get in to Columbia, Penn, Brown, CM, JHU. PTON is a reach for everyone, but you might get in too :D
best of luck

thanks.

I think they deferred me bc of my 1st MP grade in calc. They called my counselor for my grades.

Thanks though for the compliments.

You have been working hard and will find a place that will bring you success. Don't let this get you down.

I'm curious baykin if you have any true safeties, like any you've already gotten into (like Rutgers since you're from NJ)??

Regardless I think you'll get into at least a couple but a little surprised Cornell didn't take you ED.

man... if you just had a 3.9+ GPA, you would've had a really good shot at MIT!

2331clk, I am already accepted to Maryland with $.

surge: yeah iknow my GPA is really holding me back

Dude, even if your GPA holds you back, you've obviously taken lots of hard courses and you have some incredible SATs. I think you'll excel wherever you go, please don't feel down. MIT didn't reject cause you weren't good enough, it's cause there just aren't enough spots. You're exactly the type of candidate they want IMO.

thanks murasaki

It's quite difficult to get into those schools because everyone else has the same credentials as you. However, you might have gotten into MIT if you mentioned that you wanted to major in Economics or English. Always do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. That way you could still take the classes that interest you and take advantage of the school's alummi data base when it comes time to get those highly sort after summer internships.

He can't say that, its clear he's a science kid.

MIT wants a 1550+ AND top 5%. The GPA killed you. My guess is one reach will come through though

thanks, i know, my GPA sucks. I hope one of my reaches will overlook it

If MIT was 'looking for' 5% 1550+ they would (and do) have more than enough applications to fill the spots. So you're saying when MIT admissions guys review applicants, they sort out and select from among the top 5%, 1550+ applications? This is false, and I know it for a fact. I will admit, the top 5% 1550+ are probably a more heavily admitted group, however, anything besides that WILL NOT guarantee you are rejected. A guy I know got in with a 1290.

cool, how did he do it? Did he have huge EC accomplishments or did his essays stand out?

Uh, he was black, but that's beside the point. :P

But seriously, his essay rocked and he had an awesome GPA. (But he was black for real).

I got into Penn with a similar GPA, so other factors definitely can compensate :)

Yeah but Penn isn't qas hard to get into as MIT. Besides that though, you don't need to be 1550+ and top 5% but it helps.

1550+ top 5% helping I will agree to.
