Hi I just got rejected from two schools that I thought I had a chance of getting into, Northeastern and BU. I got deferred from Northeastern at first but I don’t think I really put enough attention into trying to let them accept me so it was a bit expected. I already got into 3 other schools that I would be happy to go to (Rutgers, RIT, and PennState) but I’m curious about what you think my standings are for my remaining schools (UMD and NYU +some other schools I know I won’t get into) and why you think these schools rejected me.
SAT 2090
GPA 3.7 ((my GPA is low because of extenuating circumstances - my mom died during my sophomore year of high school and it really hit me hard))
Some other factors : I had a good resume of extracurriculars including 13 years of violin. I am a half asian half caucasian woman who is majoring in Computer Science.
well, if u are low income that could have been the reason northeastern didnt accept you(they are need aware), also the admissions for northeastern were so weird cause there kids with 2200s, 2300s gettigg straightup rejected
I have no idea about BU, my friend is a rich spanish kid(hes white tho lol) with a 1790 SAT, and he got in. Also, his sister has a 1580 SAT and she got into BU
Sorry to hear that, I’m actually surprised that you were completely rejected! I was completely rejected to BU as well, with a 2240 SAT and 3.9 GPA UW and 4.6 W. I had a lot of music based ECs and awards and 10 AP classes… passed all of the AP tests with 4’s/5’s - although I don’t think the scores were supposed to factor in to the decision. I’m half asian/half caucasian too. However, I can think of several issues with my application… like the essays.
Okay sorry I shouldn’t be babbling about myself
Some things that may have had a role are teacher recs, counselor recs, rigor of courseload, essays, ECs… You didn’t give too much info to work with. No one can really say for sure why you were rejected. However, honestly I’m surprised that you were flat out rejected.
I don’t mean to be harsh, but applying to UMD regular decision was a bad idea. They take like 90%+ of the incoming class from the priority deadline. Regardless, let’s hope for the best with your remaining schools!
Anyways, you already got into some great schools and have the potential to be successful anywhere. Hope for the best with your remaining schools and hope everything works out for you!!
I’m in the exact same position. I was waitlisted from northeastern and rejected from BU with a 34 ACT and 3.3 UW GPA. I had a 4.4 my junior year and also had extenuating circumstances before (I was in foster care). I was accepted to Case Western with a large merit scholarship and was waitlisted at WUSTL (much harder than BU or NEU). I’m starting to think that maybe those schools just aren’t as holistic/don’t care about our circumstances.
Hey just an update rejected from NYU got into UMD for spring semester and im going to try writing them a letter asking for fall admissions. Overall I am probably going to go to PennState because I would be a third generation legacy there and I like that there is more diversity there in types of people unlike RIT with its 30-70 female to male ratio. I am still going to tour UMD and try to get acceptance because they have a pretty nice Computer Science Program, but we will see once I tour all of the schools again.I am not sure how much I would like UMD because I have not spent that much time in Maryland but we shall see. I hope everyone else who replied to this thread go into more of their schools or has decided on a school of their choice!
