Rejected!

1) The masters program is of course difficult. But not nearly as hard as that 6 year law program. Which only like 2 people a year get into. I know more than just a handful of people have done the BA-MA program each year.

As for the Chicago question - the best way to answer it is, is Columbia really your dream school? Would you have picked Columbia over chicago? If so than you should still pick Barnard over chicago...the differences are not enough to put Chicago ahead of Barnard...
Plus its freakin NYC!! COME ON!!

ivyman - if it was Columbia and Chicago I would most definitely have picked Columbia hands down.. of course I would have debated a little and weighed out my options and would have thought ahh but Chicago is nice too.
But ultimately, yes I would have chosen Columbia.. NYC is unbeatable! Chicago may be a great city.. but all in all I chose Columbia as my dream school because my dream was to live in NYC for college..

But Barnard does not equal Columbia.. I'm told.. and then sometimes (like in your case) I'm told otherwise....

Don't listen to those who say barnard does not equal Columbia. You get the same education, see the same professors, hang out witht the same people. CC-Barnard-SEAS-GS - I have friends in every one of the schools. In most of my classes too. ITs only a word on paper - and remember if you are worried about that name brand thing (i.e. selling yourself after you graduate with the Columbia name) remember that your Diploma says Columbia.

What's the GS?

ivyman1, I remember that you transferred from Harvard to Columbia right? Why did you do this again?
And are you happy with your choice? You LOVE Columbia right?

Cus I'm afraid that if I go to Chicago and I don't like it, I'll be kicking myself. A big part of me knows that I'll be happy at Chicago and I'll settle in and like it, but another part of me thinks that even if I go to Chicago I'll still want to transfer to Columbia (I know what you're gonna say to this.. I know it seems like Barnard but I just need to give it some more time and TALK to Chicago students).
How hard is it to transfer anyway.. to Columbia (from a place like Chicago).. and going to Barnard, would I want to transfer to Columbia? (All the Barnard girls say I wouldn't want to)

i didnt transfer from harvard. I attended their before college, through their school of continuing education, and then again after Columbia for national security studies. I was never accepted to harvard for undergrad, but I did enjoy my time there. While the harvard name is enough to convince most to attend, I really do feel that the undergraduate education at Columbia is far more comprehensive and personal. Harvard profs tended to be very standoffish - especially with introductory courses. Columbians were less so.

ITs not horribly difficult to transfer from barnard to CC. I know personally one woman who did it, from the class after mine. It is difficult enough that they don't have hundreds doing it every year, but it is still possible. You likely wont find any reason to go through all the trouble though. Not much will change for you if you do. Except that you are likelier to get sucky dorms until you become a senior. (But remember these are sucky by NYC standards....most are very nice....)

Hmm.. I don't quite get what the Harvard thing.

Oh, and just to elaborate on your comment. A bit off topic but.. I don't think a Harvard degree is as good as it's said to be.. don't personally know what the Harvard-craze is about..

Just to clarify, now you are at Columbia as an undergrad right? What year? What's your major? (sorry for bombarding you with qs lol :))

And I'm very sure once I get over this dilemma and if I end up at Barnard.. I think I'll stay putttt... what my Barnard friends and everyone on the Barnard boards are saying.. makes me just GRIN :D lol.. hehe I know I'm swaying wayyyy more to Barnard, but I just want to give Chicago a full chance... cus I absolutely adore the courses offered there (was looking at the course catalogue they sent me in science lol !!)
Argh, HS is sucha bore these days... yawn
I wish I could sleep till May 17th when my last IB exam finishes hahhaaha!

Oh, btw (I keep forgetting to say this), I'm sorry for hijacking this thread sexydesi!!! ;) lol

High school students (or post high school students in my case) can attend harvard's school of continuing education to take courses for college credit. This is what I did before I went to Columbia.
A harvard degree is great. You get a good education. Personally I just think that the education at Columbia is more comprehensive and challenging. Not necessarily better, but you cover more and more classes are taught via the socratic method. A method that is proven in its educational value.

getting into columbia RD is practically impossible. do early if you really wanna get in. i did regular and of course didnt get in. would have gone if i had anyways though lol

I thought I would be extremely bummed, but it really didn't bother me that much. I really felt like it wasn't as important as I'd made it.

Then, I visited NYU and realized that it was definitely more my type of school, so I suppose there was a reason I didn't get into Columbia (the prestige would've made me accept it without evaluation, quite dumbly, I'll admit).

Rejections happen for a reason ... hope everyone who has to deal with a similar situation finds theirs.

Spot on jnr09.
You said it.. rejections do happen for a reason :) And once you figure that out, it's alll good :)!!!
