I have a 2060 SAT (790m, 670w, 600cr) with a 3.375 GPA. However, my 10-11th grade years used a grading scale with no + or -'s and a 92 was essentially a B, which is a 3.0, otherwise I'd have around a 3.6 with the normal grading scale. I also had a death in my family during the 10th grade. I know I have definitely worked harder than a LOT of people I know who have gotten in. I wrote about all of these things in my essay and applications, which I've had many people on here read and they say it was one of the better one's they've read. This is absolutely ridiculous. ugh =(

I'm in-state and I really wanted to get into UW. I have visited the campus and it's absolutely breath-taking to me and I adored it.

I've gotten into USC as my best school, but I'm not very sure if we can afford it. UW would definitely be there on top of my list if things don't follow through (which is very likely). I applied for Mechanical Engineering and I don't see how even though a 790 math is way above the 75th percentile even for engineering students, I still didn't get in....or even waitlisted.

Can someone tell me how the appeal process works? I can't believe this happened. ~_~ cries

Do you know, I was also rejected. I am so frustrated, it feels like they didn’t look at anything except my GPA. I’ve taken a ton of hard classes, including an independent study, my SAT was a 2110 with a 770 for the reading, and my GPA was a 3.2, and they still rejected me. Worse still, people I know have lower stats got in. I am so angry.

wow, squadus and emilychopin, i am really suprised… with those stats i really would have thought you two would get in. why do you think people with stats lower than yours got in?

also, i would recommend that in your appeal letter you also mention that you cannot afford any school out of state… that is surely a compelling reason.
anyways, congrats on usc, it takes a lot to get in there and obviously they saw something in you that they liked =)

On the USC application, there’s a lot of room to show my humorous side along with my creative side. It was actually a really fun application. :)

For the UW app, all there was is two essays - one big and one short. The prompts weren’t all too interested I guess they’re tired of essays about “How I changed for the better because of a family member dying”, since that was my main essay. I’ve taken 6 AP classes and had to move to 3 different high schools in my career. There’s no way I’m not qualified for UW if OOS people with 3.0’s can get in. This really makes me mad that there are classmates in my school who got accepted and don’t care at all about school -they cheat, copy answers off other people, etc. ~_~

Yay, now to write an unnecessary compelling appeals letter…

I don’t know if I’ll appeal because I was actually offered quite a lot from the University of Puget Sound, and they accepted me into their school of music (at any school that’s kind of a big deal for a freshman).

I auditioned for the UW School of Music too, but a combination of there only being six spots and my nerves caused me to perform horribly and not be accepted. I wonder if they held my application back until after that?

squadus, that is so wierd you wouldn’t get into UW but you did get into USC because USC is a way higher and more difficult school to get into :-/. But I’m totally with you, Ive take a ton of AP classes and I’m pretty sure I got rejected (UW seems to be sending all their rejection letters now and are done with their acceptances) but my neighbor (who is one of those people who seem to get everything they want without having to work for it) got in with like 2 AP classes and a gpa way less than mine and got accepted. UW is acting ridiculous

i am so scared right now. my status changed to received on 3/25 and no UOT load. so far, people that have experienced this have been rejected…i know a girl last year who had a 2.8 that was accepted…uw is tricky.

Ok, so I’m checking back in. My s got his thin letter in the mail today. It was a rejection. I’m really hoping that the rest of you who had transcripts didn’t load get better news. Good luck to all of you.

I dont know what to feel right now. All my friends, most of whom would consider me their intellectual superior got in. One of my friends, who I actually tutored, had a 3.4 with much easier classes and a 1200/1800 SAT got in. I took honors math/science every year… blah.

My status is still in received btw. So i don’t think the website is reliable at all anymore. Does anyone know the chances of being admitted off the waitlist? My senior year grades were pretty good…

I’ve just got to say this – stop looking at just SAT scores and calling them “good stats”! Yes, they’ve got some great scores, but they’ve got 3.2s and 3.3s which are nothing remarkable…I know we have challenges and, in squadas’s case, she explained it, but if the adcom don’t know what’s up, that’s going to stand out…

You were accepted to USC but rejected by UW. I was rejected by USC but accepted to UW. It seemed like USC took SAT scores into much greater consideration. I felt like UW gave me a fairer review, because they looked at my total application instead of just SAT scores. I was accepted in the UW business school which only accepts 10% of applicants, yet rejected from USC. The college process seems very subjective and unfair, I know how you feel…

My stats:
3.88 UW GPA
1970 SAT
7 APs, alot of honors
Alot of ECs, mainly deca and business related activities. Also NHS, community service…many more.
Essays and Recs strong.

Accepted to UW and Freshman Direct business program
REJECTED from USC

Rejected by Duke, wait-listed by Vandy, accepted at Stanford (which has about a 7.5% admit rate this year)…yeah, the college admissions process is a crapshoot! I can’t beleive I got so lucky with Stanford though, it was, far and away, my top choice!

^^Yeah, I did. I haven’t visited Stanford yet (going to admit weekend late April), so I’ll make my final decision after that…lol, I’m really trying to push for Stanford (with my parents) though. They don’t seem too hard to push…

Also, I have visited Seattle and Portland (last summer) and it’s absolutely gorgeous…wow.

Tawo, you resent me? hahhaa How does that work?

If tomorrow I get a good FA offer from USC, then I really don’t even care anymore haha. I will have opened a spot for someone else unintentionally, which would make me happy. :D

wakesnowboard17, I do think USC places more emphasis on SAT rather than GPA, which is the opposite of UW, but overall USC still has a higher avg GPA. I think the fact that I have a low EFC may have turned UW away from me and since USC is need-blind it only made my application look stronger since I grew up in a more “disadvantaged” life. Apparently they enjoyed my humor and personality that showed through the application, whereas in the UW app all they have is 2 essays. Sorry wakesnowboard17, I guess you just rolled the wrong side of the die for USC, but UW is still a wonderful school!
