Rejected?

Has anyone been rejected yet? I'm still waiting to hear back....
I got into cal poly SLO for engineering...is it actually harder to get into UCI?
fml. i hate waiting...

Usually it’s harder to get into UCI. What I can say though is sit back and try to enjoy your senior year of high school. I know the waiting game sucks, but stay patient for your own sanity. Enjoy yourself!

For engineering, SLO is much more competitive… but who can complain? Number 1-3 in most engineering programs for public schools… It also seems more based on numbers, since you can’t mention extracurriculars or write essays.

Actually it is much harder to get into Engineering at SLO, they are ranked in the top 5 Engineering schools that do not offer a doctorate. I was wait listed for Electrical Engineering.

At the same time, I have got into Purdue Engineering, which is ranked #9 in the country.

and… I still have heard nothing from UCI and I put Undecided Physical Sciences.

I would like to make a point of clarification: SLO is ranked number one in engineering programs for public schools that do NOT offer anything higher than an M.S. This excludes a majority of universities out there when being ranked.

The Legend:

That is by far the most odd situation ever. I was easily accepted to SLO when denied from UCB,UCLA, UCSD,UCD,UCSB which are all lower ranked than Purdue. You might want to see why you got waitlisted. It’s not THAT competitive…

Well, I hope to get into some of the UC’s you named. lol. I would seriously attend Purdue, but the OOS tuition is just to much.

But, I think it does make sense for the Cal Poly side. There has been a HUGE increase in the number of applicants this year and they have to wait list or reject people they did not in the past. Just look at the wait list thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/cal-poly-san-luis-obispo/867860-official-waitlist-cal-poly-slo.html

People with much better stats then me have been wait listed. Also, they do not read Essays, which is what I think got me into Purdue.

It’s possible Purdue admitted you for other reasons than stats, which I believe is important. A comprehensive review is more fair and realistic. Aside from that, I think the reason why is because CSUs are trying to cut down on out of area admissions. There are some news reports of the CSU system committing to accepting mostly local students for undergrad…

Hmmm…
Well I don’t plan to choose Irvine over Cal Poly but i was just wondering if Irvine sends out rejection letters at the same time that they send out acceptance letters?
I’m just really worried that if I can’t get into Irvine…then i probably won’t get in to any of the other UCs xD

Let’s see. I just got rejected from Cal Poly SLO for Civil Engineering.
But I did get into UC Irvine for Engineering Undeclared.

Hmm, seems like the economy is boosting the selectivity of SLO.

i know a handful of people from my school who got rejected from UCI but got into IVY league schools. sometimes it is because you are overqualified and they dont think you will attend their school.

@seniorready2go that’s absurd, why would they reject over-qualified students :frowning:

@the legend I put undeclared physical science for UCI as well, still nothing. Goodluck!

likfox, they might do that for the sake of their yield rate.

That is ridiculous they rejected highly qualified students for the fact that they were so highly qualified.

^ actually… i think its okay they do that since those “over qualified” students are taking up an admission spot of someone who is qualified too (but just not with as great stats), and besides, seemingly overqualified people have a BETTER place to go <– probably the admissions people see this…
idk though  getting rejected from any school sucks either way ):

From the patterns I have noticed throughout college, I don’t believe that is the case. This is formerly known as “Tufts Syndrome” since Tufts first deployed this strategy. In California, they usually do not use this method. Admissions are based off of available resources/seats in a program and the historical rate of students accepting admissions. To combat the challenge you are presented, universities tend to release admissions in waves and use wait lists.

From what I’ve heard, UCI will be a growing campus starting next year. That means they will be accepting more students. Last year, they took in 4000-4500 students, this year I heard it is estimated they will take in about 5000-5500.

There’s no evidence that UCI would reject someone because their not qualified. There are plenty of people who get rejected who have 4.0 and over 2100 SAT’s because they showed no involvement or initiative in their high school activities. If for some reason their essays appealed more to UCLA then that would explain why they were accepted there and not UCI. People who say they were “overqualified” just use it as an excuse for why they were rejected.

^um…did you even apply to the UCs? the application you turn is sent to ALL the UCs.
