Hey guys :)

What would it take to make you reject an offer from Oxford? My guess would be basically only HYP and any other ultra-competitive institution (Penn's dual degree programs, Juilliard, Cooper Union, etc). What do you guys think?

No, there could be lots of reasons to turn down Oxford. The educational approach there is quite different from that in U.S. colleges and universities. You’re accepted to study a particular subject. I can easily imagine a U.S. HS student applying to Oxford to study X, then having second thoughts, or simply deciding that she wasn’t ready to narrow the field. Or, the applicant might have second thoughts about being that far from home. There are quite literally dozens of high quality colleges and universities in the U.S. where one can get an outstanding undergraduate education, and for many students the U.S. liberal arts approach of starting broad and narrowing later makes a lot more sense than the Oxbridge approach of early specialization.

Oxford’s price tag, according to its website:

Tuition: $20,100-23,000 (Depends on subject)
College fee: $9000 (Internationals only)
Accommodation: $5400
Food: $3500
Course costs: $475

Total: $38,475-41,375

That’s not even including airfare. With the possibility of obtaining financial aid extremely low, I can see most American students readily choosing a rather large number of colleges over Oxford.

I don’t think I would be interested in Oxford in the first place even though it’s an excellent school.

Cambridge…
heheh, no, definitely the price :(

Oxbridge makes more sense as a post-undergrad institution for most Americans.
