So, I went to a counselor and asked about the TAG program and she asked if I was serious about the campus bla bla. And I told her can I apply for TAG and then decline it if I got into a better UC. Then she went on lecturing me about being rude etc etc. Then she told me she won't do it if I'm not serious about the UC. So that confused me and in the end I learnt nothing about TAG. So can I choose other UCs even though I have done TAG with a certain UC and then not go? Will this affect my chances of admission at other UCs if they know I have TAG? can they? Sorry if this has been posted before but I am really confused.

No it shouldnt matter at all. She sounds rude!! But anyway. I did TAG to UCSD and got accepted but also got accepted to UCLA so I will be going there and declined UCSD. They have no idea/care where else you apply. As long as you are a strong applicant, you will get in where you want to go.

Tell your counselor to get the pine cone out of her ass. It will NOT matter, the UC you signed the TAG with will not force you to attend. Just sign one for UCSD,UCSB,UCI,UCD and then wait it out for UCLA/UCB.

Don’t worry about breaking TAGs for even a second. I TAGged 3 schools, (Irvine, San Diego, and Davis) and ended up going to Berkeley. You should TAG as many schools as you feel is appropriate, (I would recommend 3+, so you have choices.) TAG is a great system, you should take advantage of it to the greatest extent. It helps reduce admissions anxiety by a huge amount.

I really feel for you having a weak college counselor, I had a few also. Don’t let that stop you at all though- fill in the TAG paperwork by yourself if you have to.

What?? That counselor is ridiculous and pretty much incompetent. Never go to her again. Like everyone else said, you absolutely can choose another campus even if you have a TAG with another. The UCs are giant schools with thousands of applicants, and they do not care one way or another. Having a TAG to one school will NOT affect your chance of admission to another. Also, as far as I know, the only UC that requires you sign any paperwork for TAG is Davis. For all the others, you simply check a little box on your transfer application in November (and then of course complete the TAG requirements before transfer).

The UCs are not going to get butt hurt because you rejected their TAG. They know that those agreements are used as safeties for most people.
