Just curious.......

Is there anyone here who rejected their first choice college? If so, what was your reason?

Lots of kids do. Usually for financial reasons. No big deal. There are lots of great schools.

my d rejected her first choice because it was too expensive and the finaid package offered did not help.

good point weenie; d was disappointed but got over it and went to another great school.

Actually, a recent survey came out said that only 25% of students that rejected their first-choice college did it for financial reasons....heard it on CBS News

^ There is a long discussion about that "study" elsewhere on here. There are some real reservations about the methodology.

Regardless, if a kid is accepted at their "first choice" school, and they can afford to go, then WHY wouldn't they go?

If you hang around CC long enough, and if you go through a few cycles of college admissions with kids and their friends, you'll see that the main reason is money.

for example, some people didnt go to jhu after they heard about the death of 2 students at the school....

It is you first choice if you want to go there more than anywhere else. The only reason I could see someone rejecting their top choice is money or parents.

anakin...2 security guards whereever you look...security is not what you should be concerned about but rather the lack of privacy...eg: hard to sell/buy drugs now O.o

Or... you change your mind.

It is kind of like a change of major---You can certainly change your mind. However, it shows something less than total commitment to begin with.-- NYU was my first choice and I never had a second thought about another school. That's why they have ED --for those truely committed to a certain school.

why wouldn't they go? Ans: geography, bf/gf going somewhere else, parent became ill, there are plenty of plausible reasons.

just to add to bluebaryou, the only plausible and acceptable reason is bf/gf going somewhere else =D

I've seen kids get accepted, do an overnight/sit in on classes at 1st choice and then at others, and 1st choice falls down the list. Kid does go to "1st choice", but it's not the same 1st choice as they had in March.

There are many who don't even apply to "1st choice school" for financial reasons, so I think the 25% figure is an underestimate as to how many kids don't attend due to finances.

I meant it was my d's first choice in April after she was accepted and did the overnights.

Like I indicated if you were truely sure of the school for you, you would have applied ED if offered. The term first choice means very little without a solid commitment that comes from totally researching a school.
