Rejection from CSULB

I’m a senior from Southern California. All of my friends who applied to CSULB either got accepted or waitlisted. I’m #4 in my class of 700, with a GPA of 4.45. However, my ACT and SAT scores aren’t that outstanding. I got a 28 and 1240, respectively. My friends all got their letters yesterday and I got my rejection about 2 weeks ago. I’m just curious as to why I got rejected. (To give you perspective, one of my classmates has a 3.6 GPA and a 1300 on the SAT, and was accepted. Another with a 4.1 and 1100 on the SAT was waitlisted.)
If it matters, I applied with an Environmental Science major.

CSULB admits by major, so you cannot compare your stats with another applicant that has a different major. They do not consider class rank. They also admit by Eligibility index and admit from the top down until all spots are filled it will depend upon major, your EI and the # of spots available in that major. All majors at CSULB are impacted meaning that there are more qualified applicants than spots available so unfortunately many qualified applicants will be denied.

Also I have found that many applicants do not calculate their CSU capped weighted GPA correctly including your self, since the highest capped GPA would be 4.4 for the CSU’s so you cannot be certain the GPA they stated is actually the GPA that they were admitted with at CSULB.

Hopefully you applied widely and will have several good options once all the decisions are posted.

Best of luck.

@Pauka0174, CSULB must give priority to those who live in their service area, as do the other popular CS campuses such as Fullerton and San Diego. My niece was just accepted to CSULB this weekend with an unweighted gpa of 2.8 (fully weighted at 3.4) and a 1180 SAT…but she’s in their service area! A boy from our high school just got wait-listed this weekend with a 4.0 WGPA and 1350 SAT…he’s not in the service area. You are in good company. Your stats are excellent…you will be likely be admitted to other excellent programs!

I also applied as an Environmental Science and Policy major and found that many people with relatively high stats got rejected. I was rejected, but I don’t exactly consider myself as having high stats (although long beach should have been a target school based on my stats.) I think there was probably limited space in our major or something
