Sorry to sound like such a pessimist thread b/c of the title...but about how many % of Pton ED applicants are rejected in mid december? I ask because my friend was rejected from Columbia with very good numbers and I am worried about my own possible rejection. Tell me the truth, what you know.

I would say very very low........around like 5% each year

Not many. I believe that deferral is almost the equivalent of rejection (it's a courteous rejection, ie you're a nice kid, but you just don't have what it takes.) Princeton defers most kids so they don't offend the early applicants, who are showing dedication and loyalty to the school by applying early.

Let's put it this way: Most people will get deferred. Your chances are getting in are probably HIGHER than your chances of getting rejected. So don't stress it.

two different answers ahhhhh....if deferral is close to equivalent of rejection we are lookin at about 30% rejection or 5%???? Which one?

bill meant in the underlying meaning is rejection, not that the NUMBER of rejections and deferrals are same

Columbia only defers if they REALLY wanna look at the kid again in spring...

Princeton rejects if there is something REALLY wrong with the applicant...otherwise he is accepted or defered

I won't compare the Columbia board to predict Princeton's ED because they both have TOTALLY different approached to admissions (and hence deferals and rejections)

Do you believe they send some "deferrel" letters but actually place the application in their own rejection bin?

ok, but if it's 5% that is reassuring...

good point worldshopper...

I don't know of the % of deferrels who become admits but I would think it would be in Ptn's best interest to admit as many ED applicants during the RD round as they can since those applicants would most likely attend Ptn and Ptn can increase their yield. I have also heard that it is very unlikely to get in RD after being deferred during ED although there are exceptions.

worldshopper, I believe that the acceptance rate for ED deferees is 14% which is above the RD 8-9%. We EDers are at an advantage either ways: we either get accepted now, or have a higher than normal chance of getting in RD.

I just figured a deferrel was a rejection in disguise. But I hope you are correct in your assumption.

Deferral, for most people, means "You're a very good student. But you lack a certain something" If you manage to develop that certain something and show it to the admissions office, then they may reconsider.

I have met at least two people who I know for a fact were deferred and then accepted; if you check last year's results, I'm pretty sure there were also a few CCers who had been deferred ED and accepted RD.

Deferral isn't a good sign. But it isn't a rejection in disguise either; the adcoms will take another look at you, and it is posisble to get in.

Yea, I remember zantedeschia (sp?) was deferred and then accepted RD. I like the way you put it ICargirl.
