Rejections: Class of 2007

Our son got rejected from UMich almost immediately. He has received two other acceptances with scholarships, one for a theater program with a musical emphasis and one for a BFA. But his next choices may be dicey.

mamalot, congrats on your son's acceptances with scholarships! That's great news! And they say that it's never over until it's over, so more acceptances may be in the making. Keep the faith.

I received a letter from Otterbein Friday, said I made the "pool" of prospective applicants.

Two questions:

Does everyone receive this letter after their Otterbein audition?

Are rejections sent out as well?

Thanks in advance for your response!!

zippitydoda,my d also received this letter...one of her friends got a rejection letter a couple of days later,i would still be curious as to how many prospective letters were sent out???she/we are still hopeful as otterbein is at the top of her wish list

My daughter received her "consideration" letter from Otterbein on Saturday and a friend of hers received one earlier in the week. I do know of some that have received rejection letters as well.

How many does Otterbein end up accepting?

4F, 4M for MT! (at least that's what it was in the past)

I recall in the past, DoctorJohn mentioning for the BFA in MT (not including the other degree options), they take 8, four boys, four girls. Because it is a small program, I don't think they accept more to yield 8, but rather go to a waitlist if the any of the 8 do not choose to take the offer.

EDIT:
Ahhh.....cross posted with artsymom!

Wow, that's small! I wonder how many "you are still being considered" letters they have sent out.

I don't know about you, but it annoys me when I read that many of these schools are only taking 8 kids or 9 kids but auditioning 200-700. Tuition/fees are so high at these schools. How is it that they can't hire some more people and raise the numbers to 25 or so? I realize how expensive it is to put up a show, but 8 kids seems like so few! (My D did not audition at schools that took less than ten.)

"Not knowing" is what creates so much stress. I think it's thoughtful of Otterbein to send out letters to advise auditioners that they're either in-the-running, or out-of-the-running.

Sarahsmom - I think that for schools that take a handful of students, it is not so much a question of cost, but rather their philosophical position. My guess is that they want the students to be able to get not only individual attention in classes, but also reasonable performance opportunities. For some schools, that balance is maintained by extra shows that are student-directed, or expanded production schedules, or double casting roles. Other schools make the decision to do it by limiting the number of majors. Even a class of 25, which seems small by some standards, results in 100 MT majors in the program. Unless they consistently do large-scale shows with big ensembles, that leaves a lot of majors uncast. And, while the learning that takes place in classes is of utmost importance, the ability to appear in shows, and learn from that practical experience is also very valuable to anyone in this field.

rejected from umich today! woot! one down, ten to go

Thank you for your feedback on the Otterbein pool letters! I am interested as well as to how many "pool" letters were sent out.

Did they do this last year?

So I haven't gotten anything from Otterbein yet and I auditioned at the Chicago Unifieds. Is this good news? Bad news? Means nothing???

Zippity, I believe this is the first year that Otterbein has issued the pool letters. You might find this thread with DoctorJohn's comments helpful (particularly posts #2, #3, #35 and #36): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=78857

Sorry to hear the news babygiraffe - and best of luck danimal w/ Otterbein. This 'wait' period is tough but we just have to know that we will all end up where we are meant to be!

keep your fingers crossed and head up high :)

MTCC,
I'm sure you're right and it makes total sense now that you put it that way. Maybe I should be just wishing more schools would offer MT!:)

My D did not get a phone call from Elon. It can only be bad news. We were really hoping that it was the one for her. We didn't go into this blind. So many people told us not to worry. I feel like such a fool.

No call from Elon today, no FSU, and waitlisted at Alabama......wow I've been holding that in for quite a while.
I completely second your comment Sarahsmom42.......Not a happy time : (
And to top it off opening night for spring musical is tomorrow! Quite a terrible time to experience so much rejection.
I hope it will all work out
