I was accepted into Notre Dame and MIT, but rejcted by BU. I’m more confused than bitter. While browsing through the “Official Regular Decision Application Thread,” it seems like many of you are in the same boat (applicants with high test scores who was rejected in favor of other students with lower scores). Although BU was never my first choice, I still find it difficult to accept rejection from any school.

I obviously don’t know what the admissions committee’s rationale was, but I do recall that on the BU Supplement to the common app, it asked to list other schools to which you applied; did you do this?

I myself was denied by MIT, but perhaps if you listed that you applied to MIT (and I assume other top schools) they may have suspected that you would be accepted/attend elsewhere and that it would be futile to accept you (since they just may be your safety)… I.E., “Tufts Syndrome”. Clearly they weren’t worried about ME choosing someplace else, LOL.

They probably thought that you were using BU as a safety school. They’ve been known to reject students with high stats for that very reason. Either way, I’m sorry but congrats on Notre Dame & MIT, both great schools.

There is no answer, my son applied for the trustee scholarship, average way above what BU is looking for and did not get into the honors program or any merit and not great grants. All of his other schools he received top merit and honor programs. He won the coronat scholarship at Syracuse so it does not matter but BU is not doing something right this year. Good luck to all that have to make decisions still.

Some stats:1540/2250
ACT 34
more AP than needed, president of Thespians, tons of EC

Really its probably because you applied to BU as a safety (or at least it seems like it), and you most likely didn’t put as much effort into your BU app than say the schools you really wanted to get into - just a thought. Also, there really is more to an App than just GPA and SAT scores, Essays also have a huge impact. Rejection is part of life, be happy that you got into other great schools!

His essays were very good and that is what helped him get into all his choices, while reading this site there are alot of unhappy people today. He is not choosing this school but alot of the information that was given out was not accurate on this school. I wish everyone the best of luck on their choices

Some of the results on these threads seem bizarre. Admit/waitlist/deny decisions and merit awards??? Someone posted that they got $38,000 in grants with a 1720 SAT??? Either people aren’t being completely truthful or BU has a major care of Tufts Syndrome. BTW, I never believed in TS until reading these results today.

@SteelBubble: What other schools did you apply to? And did you specify them on the BU supplement? It was optional, but (as I mentioned previously) I wouldn’t be surprised if they used it for the ole’ Tufts Syndrome tactic.

I personally tried to use it to my advantage, though I have no idea if they even gave it a passing thought. All of my schools are reaches except for my in-state safety and BU, so I listed all of them, reasoning that BU might try to entice me with scholarships to 1-up the in-state safety/a possible admittance from an Ivy that would likely give me no money. Seems convoluted by I figured I had nothing to lose.

While I understand your frustration ad22043, TacticalPenguin, and SteelBubble, I have to agree with BU’s decisions. I’m slightly above average with test scores and extracurriculars and BU is one of my serious options. If you guys had been admitted and received top financial aid, then students like myself couldn’t even consider attending BU due to lack of aid.

I didn’t post which other schools I applied to for that exact reason. It didn’t say it was required on the Common app, so I didn’t find any need too.
