I have a relatively high rank right now, about 10 or so out of 400-500 kids. This is mainly because I took several classes before high school and I took a lot of honors/AP classes which are given an extra point in the weighted GPA system. I expect to stay in the top 10 or 20 up till graduation.
However, my unweighted GPA is pretty bad :(. I’m guessing its at a 3.4 or maybe even lower now. I can probably bring it up to 3.7-3.8 by senior year, possibly even 3.9, but I’ve gotten 2 semesters of 5 B’s this year(So many! :(). Its been a really rought year for me. How is this going to affect me? Keep in mind, my rank is still easily in the top 5% of 500 at a relatively competitive school. I’m afraid this is going to knock out any chances of my shot at an ivy or selective school. I’m a sophomore, I got all A’s freshmen year.

hmmm... Well, I'm taking a tough junior year. Calc BC, AP Chem, possibly AP Physics, USHAP, English AP, Psych AP, and orchestra... I'm pretty confident I'll be making A's in those since I will be dropping track/cc, so I will have more time to focus on my studies.

I know freshmen year isn't generally considered much, but I have some positives, I've taken a pretty hard course load this year(Precalc H, AP Euro, AP Bio, English H, Physics H, and some others - there was some grade deflation in a couple of these classes... so that kinda explains why I got the B's too :-/, although I will take most of the blame), my class rank is pretty high, and I'm banking on maintaining straight A's throughout the rest of high school, so I'll end up with a relatively decent GPA, but there will be quite a B's on my transcript (5 B's out of probably around 30-35 units)... :-/

Well, I don't have a 3.0 :-/. The my rank is so high is I took a couple of courses before high school, and my highschool ranks by weighted GPA - my weighted GPA is rather high actually, since they give +1 point for honors/AP, so a B is technically = to an A.

And I wouldn't qualify my school as being "dumb." We sent a couple of kids to ivies last year, and almost all of the graduates go on to college (Thats not saying much, but its not a total crap school :p). I don't think it can compete with any of super elite schools like Andover or Exeter, but we have our fair share of smart kids - 1600's, 35's on ACT, National Merit, etc.

Anyways, there was some major grade deflation in some classes, the average grade was in the 60's for quite a while... So I'm glad I'm pull through with a B actually lol.

edit: Anyways, I'm relatively sure my UW GPA will end up being in the 3.7-3.9 range by graduation, raising it 2 or 3 decimals can't be that hard eh? I'm just worried about all those B's show up, my extra classes are basically providing padding for the numerical value i guess.

And getting straight A's freshman year, trashes your deflation theory, i don't wanna sound negative i'm just making sure your not being unrealistic

Yeah, I'm asian, but I kinda doubt that is any help. I've got some pretty good ECs though, so I guess that may make up for it. I've started an extremely large webhosting company using some really new server load balancing technology. I'm also working on some neural network stuff(programming), augmented reality research, and I also built my own laser during my spare time :). School/academics haven't really my strong point this year :(, I haven't been devoting enough time to academics with all the stuff I've been doing.

Grade deflation isn't rampant in all of my classes, I was fortunate enough not to get any grade-deflated classes freshman year. There are particular classes in which this happens (I.e. Physics and AP Biology - the teachers feel that you must have a drive to go above and beyond. The average "should" be a C they say, and those who go above and beyond get B's. Finally, those 2 or 3 kids who study their butts off 24/7, turn in extra credit, and do extra things after school get A's :-/. Its sick).

Anyways, I'm just curious if these B's will knock me out of the running, as in they won't even look at my other stuff with these grades :(. Because I'm pretty sure my ECs will more than cut it, as well as my SAT scores.

well i've taken every class uve namd except Physics i took AP envin science, so i and colleges know what your going through

however being asian is not not going to help but in some cases hurts because the mount of asians with good grades i mean 4.0^ is gigantic and i can bet you atleast half are good with some form of computers

But your grades are good enough to get into a good college, Ivy uhhh, my friend John Blank is also asian he had a 4.1 avrg in high school not your EC's but high SATs as well was denied at UCB and UCSD

Yeah, I've got a 4.0+ GPA unweighted, actually its around a 4.7 or 4.8 - hence my high class rank. Its not by the UC system I'm pretty sure though, its mainly because of all the classes I took before highschool and the Honors/AP classes I'm in. I'm just worried about those darn B's :-/. I guess I'll just have to pray for the best and see.

Bah. Don't worry. However, how do you have a 4.0+ UNWEIGHTED? Do you want to check that?

I had about a 3.4, 3.5 UW, and a 3.875 W. Actually, the LAUSD computers calculate the overall Weighted GPA for class ranking, so ... whatever.. unweighted calculations had to be done by hand.

Everyone's unweighted GPA stinks sooner or later. The people with 3.8, 3.9 UW GPAs suddenly find that the admissions committees don't agree with their unweighted assessment.. :P..

Seriously, don't worry about it. What colleges/universities are you considering? Remember, try to do well Junior year, it's the most critical year there is. (Also the year I slacked off the most.. hehehe)..

Well, I was originally considering some top LACs like Amherst (my dad went :)), and possibly some Ivies(Harvard? ;))/Stanford. I was considering Purdue as well since my mom was a professor there ^^. But my GPA has dropped like a rock t_t, I have no idea where I'm headed now lol.

This was probably the worst/2nd worst year for me to slack off, but being the smart guy I am, I decided to kick back and take it easy. Its going come back and bite me before the school year even ends haha.
