Religion as an essay topic?

My son is a very creative person: music, art, and writing. There are a million interesting things he could write about. For his big college essay he is leaning towards writing something about religion. I'm not biased against religion at all, actually I'm in favor of it, but I've never been that interested in other people's religious experiences.

I'm wondering if the adcoms will feel the same way. My fear is that they read about this all day long, and the amount that can be said about it isn't that great. And that it will be very hard for him to write an essay that will really stand out and show his creative side.

On the other hand he is really creative and his story is his story and that's unique.

Stay away from politics and religion.

I can understand how people fear that essays on religion are possibly offensive to some unknown person on the Adcom, but religious experiences and anecdotes are part of the human experience. If handled with tact, the big essay could broach religious territory.

Honestly, almost any subject is a potential negative if an Adcom reader is narrow-minded. An essay on skateboarding might irk the committee member who is sick of kids longboarding on his street. An essay about a beauty pageant experience might annoy an unattractive reader. Anything is potentially offensive.

That said, I think adcom members are savvy enough to be able to read an essay on religious experiences with an open mind.

What’s with the advertising for that site?

My suggestion would also be to stay away from lightening rods and religion happens to be one of them
