I'm really interested in several NESCAC schools, and I'm wondering how open the Middlebury campus community is to people with strong religious beliefs. Is it open and welcoming? Skeptical? Hostile? How would you characterize life at Midd for a religious person?

I would say that Middlebury is not at all hostile to religion, but the majority of the students are not active participants in religious life on campus. My daughter is a member of the Middlebury Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, which is a very active group. There is also A Newman group for Catholic students and a Hillel for Jewish students. My daughter attends St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, which is a very welcoming to students. She enjoys the company of her Intervarsity friends but as an Anglican/Episcopalian does not always share their more evangelical Protestant views. They are very understanding about this. Middlebury students all seem to be friendly and nice and tolerant. Your sincere religious beliefs would be respected, and you would find kindred souls.
