Religion In The Common App Essay

Hi so I choose the first Common Application essay prompt witch is share a story that is central to your identity. I wanted to write about Buddhism. I already wrote most of my essay but am now starting to question if it was the right choice. I do not anywhere in my essay preach my beliefs. I talk about how meditation and studying Buddhist philosophies helped me get through high school stress and helped me make a connection with the world. I tried to frame it more as a philosophy rather then religion. I am applying to George Washington and American with a International Relations major so I also tried to talk about how Buddhism helped shaped my world view. Is this appropriate for a college essay and more ideally is there anything you could recommend that would make the subject less controversial. I really think this is a necessary part of me and should be included in my application so I really want this to work

Thank you in advance.

I think it’s fine and will make an interesting essay. I heard an admissions officer at a secular school say that one of the best application essays he ever read was about Buddhism, for what it’s worth.

I think it would depend to where your applying but Buddhism is a pretty lax religion so you should be good.
