Religion Thingy...

I wanted to know whether being a Muslim would help my chances or reduce my chances at top colleges (top 10). I know Muslims are a religous minority so it might help a school who wanted religous diversity, however if the admissions officer really didn't like Muslims that would screw me up... What should i do?????

Also: Does being able to Speak Arabic fluently help in college admissions (like significantly?)

Hmm I'm not sure if being Muslim really affected my chances. I mean I don't even recall them asking what my religion was. I mean chances were they could probably guess from my name but they never asked me it up front. Good luck!

No. The Common Data Sets (section C7) specifically state that religious affiliation is not considered.

It'll help you get a job. At least the speaking Arabic will.

The religion thing might not help you because I'm not sure if it's specifically asked on the application. As for it going against you, yes it could, but no more than being a minority could go against any minority. Speaking Arabic, while extreamly cool, will probably not help significantly. I know that being from a different country or at least differnt cultural background will make for interesting and therefore better interviews/essays.

That being said, go ahead and mention it, but intergrate it within some essay or something. Good luck!

Gracias!!!!!!! lol, when you take spanish in High school you just have to speak it sometimes!!

I doubt speaking Arabic is a great advantage in college admission. I don't think it was a huge advantage for me...

I work in the field and I can assure you that colleges value diversity in their student body because it enhances the academic experience for all students. If you do speak Arabic and are Muslim, I would definitely mention it in a personal essay. If you are a definite accept, it will not affect the decision in any way and you have lost nothing; However, if you are a borderline accept, it could actually make you a stronger applicant.

I wouldn't worry about being kept out because of anti-Muslim or anti-Arab discrimination. Chances are, you wouldn't want to attend such a school anyway.

Catfish makes a good point. :)

yep..true...
