Religion

I am jewish and am really interested in Davidson. I visited and I am in love with the campus. I want to play womens college soccer here and was wondering what it is like to have an religious atmosphere that isnt my own. Should that change anything?

My daughter is an incoming freshman at Davidson. We just attended orientation and based on what I saw and heard for the past few days, I think your experience will be the same as any other Davidson student. Everyone was extremely welcoming and tolerant of other beliefs. There is a synagogue in walking distance of campus. I don’t think you could find a more perfect place to spend the next four years. Good luck to you!

Hey Jamoboo,

I’m a Jewish freshman at Davidson. I had the same mild apprehensions as you seem to have, and they’re not entirely unfounded. Davidson is Presbyterian, but that’s not a bad thing at all. Presbyterianism (as I’ve since learned) differs from other forms of Christianity for it’s reformed tradition and openness. For that reason, it’s not a surprise that a lot of presbyterian colleges are really good (i.e. Princeton). I’ve had nothing short of an incredible time here so far.

You probably want to hear about Jewish life. It exists. My class of 495 includes 28 Jews, the highest percentage of any class in the college’s history. The new president has been selling the school in areas that have a high jewish population. The college recently took on the local congregation’s Rabbi as an Adjunct Chaplain. He’s looking to expand the scope of the Hillel and plan fun events for Jews on campus, as well as anybody interested. Just this weekend, we had a bagel brunch. I’m even planning on signing up for the Taglit Birthright trip for this winter with a few of my classmates. Jewish life is certainly alive here, if you’re looking for a reassurance.

I’m from New Jersey, where a good quarter of my high school was Jewish. That’s simply not here, but what is here is a great community of students. There’s no reason to be thrown off by Davidson’s Presbyterian Heritage. It is in no way exclusive. This is the most friendly place I’ve ever been.

Hope this helps!
