Remember UVA has its own Fin Aid form that must be submitted by 3/1, with tax returns

It can be confusing with the variation between financial aid processes for various colleges. Most either want just the fafsa or they want the fafsa and the CSS profile. Many other colleges only require that tax returns be submitted if the family is selected for the verification process. However, please remember that UVa is different.

UVa requires that fafsa, UVa's own financial aid form and signed tax returns be submitted by March 1.

The UVa form is very similar to the CSS Profile, but does not get submitted through the College Board. It is submitted through the UVa student portal.

U.Va. Financial Aid - Entering/Transfer Students

Remember that UVa and many other colleges want financial aid forms submitted BEFORE you are admitted.

The explanation you have given seems to be confusing as well.

The info I posted above was off the UVa website for the 2010-1 year. For the 2011-2012 year for incoming first year, UVa has switched over to the CSS Profile, instead of its own FA form.

March 1 is the priority date for the fafsa and profile, with tax forms submitted as soon as possible. Excerpts from student portal:

"Complete the CSS/PROFILE only if you are an entering undergraduate or transfer undergraduate student for Fall 2011. (Returning students should complete only the FAFSA and should not complete the CSS/PROFILE.)

By March 1st, 2011:

Submit your CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE application for 2011-2012 by our priority filing date of March 1st. Failure to meet the March 1st priority filing date will likely delay your receiving a preliminary financial aid award prior to the Admission deposit deadline of May 1, 2011.

The University of Virginia’s CSS code is 5820.

Complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. You must use 2010 estimated tax information when completing your worksheet if completing prior to submitting your 2010 tax returns. If you submit the PROFILE before completing your 2010 tax returns, you may choose to estimate based on your 2009 tax return. There is a $9 charge to complete an online PROFILE, and there is a cost of $16 per school to have that completed PROFILE sent.

Apply for a U.S. Department of Education PIN. Your PIN will allow you to electronically “sign” financial aid applications and federal loan promissory notes. A student and parents of dependent students each need their own PIN. Apply for a PIN online at pin.ed.gov.

Complete the FAFSA by our priority filing date of March 1st. Failure to meet the March 1st priority filing date will likely delay your receiving a preliminary financial aid award prior to the Admission deposit deadline of May 1, 2011.

For the quickest and most accurate processing, students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA online.

UVa’s school code for the FAFSA is 003745.

Once you have completed your 2010 Tax Returns, submit SIGNED copies of your and your parents’ (or spouse’s if you are married) 2010 tax documents as soon as possible. The required forms are:

* Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ for parents
* Form 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ for students, if student is a filer
* All attached schedules
* W-2 forms for parents
* W-2 form for student

If you filed your tax return electronically, print out the signature page, sign and date it, and fax a copy of that page to us, making sure to include the student’s name and SIS id number.

Dependent students are required to submit both their parents’ and their own income tax documents. Independent students are required to submit both their and their spouse’s (if applicable) income tax documents.

If you or your parents or spouse will not file an income tax return please indicate that on your PROFILE application.

Note - if you go to the CSS Profile site and search for “University of Virginia”, it will not show up. It is under “Univ. of Virginia”

Thank you for the information Charlie.

They probably switched over to the CSS because of their new partnership with QuestBridge.

Charlie, perhaps you can contact the mods to have this thread deleted? You are going to scare a lot of people!

I’m scared and I didn’t even read the post :eek: (you’ve got to admit - this smiley is good :wink: )

Yeah I was scared looking at this post…anyways, I did my CSS Profile and FAFSA for UVa today so I’m all set financial aide. :)

Dean:

I did ask the mods to delete the thread or the headline. In any case, I think other people will make the same mistake I did and look at the outdated UVa financial aid website, which tells people to submit a separate UVa financial aid form.

Charlie, You clicked on info for the 2010-2011 academic year. Student Financial Services works with ALL students, not just first years. I would hope that those applying will realize that they are applying for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Financial Aid website is not out of date.
