Remote Learning for Fall 2021

My kid is upset because she has nine meetings a week for her classes, but only two are in person. She asked me why she even had to live in the dorms if her classes were online. I tried to say it was because the Winter Quarter will bring more in-person opportunities, but I should probably just validate her feelings: it sucks. She’s vaccinated, the school is requiring vaccinations. She’s been careful. I totally get where she’s coming from. And I know the university is doing its best, and I trust this is the way to go. But it still sucks.

I agree it sucks. Is she an incoming first year? What school, if you don’t mind sharing?

So sorry - it is tough and I somehow I think more schools will be announcing revisions to their Fall plans. Hard on all involved - hang in there.

@mwfan1921 UC Santa Cruz. Fall 2021 classes were set in the early Spring when there was still a lot of uncertainty. The chancellor is very optimistic about in-person opportunities in the Winter and Spring quarters. And Calculus 1 was always online and asynchronous even before the pandemic. Her college core class has an in person component that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays and will have no more than eighteen students.

It totally sucks but it will suck with others she will meet away from home and away from her parents :house_with_garden:. They will all complain together about all of it away from home and her parents.:house_with_garden:. She will tell you how her classes online suck and she doesn’t like wearing masks away from home and her parents.… Lol.

my sons school (RIT) did the same thing, with spring schedules showing many classes online. Currently 50% of his schedule is online, and if he really wanted to , he could be 100%. Why am I paying, yet again, for online classes. These professors get to choose , even with everyone vaccinated how they want to teach. Hopefully the social stuff will happen. He has had only one real semester so far his college career and is graduating early in May.
