Has Princeton officially removed grade deflation as of yet or are they on the way?
If the former, have any of you current students felt the impact of such a change? Or are standards so ingrained that it feels like nothing is actually happening? (I’m particularly concerned with the pre-med route).
If the latter, do you know if its set to change next year?
I believe grade deflation has officially been removed. I noticed an immediate change when I found out that one of my intro classes was no longer being curved down.
However, I would say the grading is still more difficult and the classes are more rigorous than some other places, so it’s not like the grades were inflated to Harvard levels either. It removed the egregious examples where people were being curved down and gave the professors more freedom, so I think the way the removal was implemented worked well.
I would just note that Princeton has essentially the lowest average accepted GPA into top medical schools. That means that a Princeton GPA is convertible into a much higher GPA from other schools (I think from here, it’s like 3.5, which is definitely achievable).
Thank you a lot! Now I’ll just pray I get in
Grade deflation has indeed officially been removed. But I’ve read that some departments, such as those in engineering, are still unusually tough when it comes to grades. My sense of this overall is that old habits die hard; if you’re really concerned about your future GPA, I’d think twice before attending Princeton, great though it is.
Conversely if you are thinking about being challenged to your upper limits academically, definitely consider Princeton. My son (BSE junior and varsity athlete) has grown leaps and bounds beyond what we could ever have imagined, in so many ways. The rigor of the courses he has taken has stretched him incredibly. Princeton is most definitely not for the person whose top priority is GPA but it is an excellent choice for the scholar who wants to find out what they are capable of.
