REMS vs PLME

I got accepted at:

University of Rochester REMS ( + $12000/yr scholarship)
Brown University PLME

UPenn
UVA
Tufts
Columbia
UBC
UToronto
McGill

As of now, I'm pretty sure I want to do medicine. However, things may change in the future. I'm basically choosing between REMS and PLME.. can anyone help me out?

Both programs are awesome. Either choice you make will be beneficial. Just out of curiosity..why did you apply to schools in canada?

Hey is it D. Wu. I think you pretty much set on PLME. Don't try to show off here. :)

i applied to schools in canada cz im canadian and also cuz i was worried i wouldn't get in :(

haha fatveggie :P nah i just needed more opinions before i made my final decision..

can we get your stats

intl student, ~3.95 GPA 2200 SAT (not very impressive)

i'd go with the plme but i may be biased :)

PLME, but I'm probably biased too. I don't know much about the REMS program, which accepts like 6 people/year. URochester seems boring to me.

I got a couple of friends at Rochester - not REMS - just the school. Theyre having a pretty damn good time there. I think its very laid back - no cores, etc. Big college too and pretty smart. Rochester definitely holds its own and REMS is a great program.

thank you for all your responses! i think another factor is the ability to enter into a good, or top choice residency program. does anyone know any statistics about that for rochester med school and brown alpert med school? I can't seem to find it online. that'd be much appreciated thanks!!

Members of Alpert Medical School's Class of 2008 were among the more than 15,000 U.S. medical school seniors who recently learned where they will spend their years of residency training following graduation. The news is good: according to the National Resident Matching Program, which conducts the Match, more than 94 percent of seniors who applied for residencies this year were paired with a program of their choice -- the highest percentage in more than three decades. Covering the event were both Channel 12 web news Eyewitness News WPRI / FOX Providence - Providence, Rhode Island News, Weather, Traffic and Sports | Home - Eyewitness News?
Alpert Medical School Rankings Continue to Rise

The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings reveal that in the Research category, Alpert Medical School has risen from 43 to 31 in just four short years. It has also risen in the Primary Care category, from 27 to 21, well within the top quartile.

Both medical schools have similar rankings. Look at undergrad programs. Do both offer you enough choices if you decide medicine isn't what you want? My son is a PLME and also interviewed for REMS. ONe thing he liked about UR was the TakeFive Program where you can stay for a free 5th yr, to study another subject. Maybe not that enticing to most med students, who face many years of schooling, but it appealed to my son. Both are good schools. Brown students have a bit more freedom in choosing classes but still lots of flexibility at UR. Maybe you should check into the requirements for the med programs. I've posted links to the PLME requirements, which changed last yr. NO GPA requirement, but you do need an A or B in a couple specific classes (I think they're bio). In any case, it's all spelled out on the PLME site. Not sure about the REMS requirements. For instance, do you have AP courses you want to use to fulfill requirements and do they allow that?

There are some differences in environment. Brown students can walk to train/bus stations and Providence eateries and mall. Fairly easy access to Boston, Cape Cod, RI beaches. NYC is an easy 4hr? bus or train ride. Don't need a car. I think there's a Rochester bus loop that goes through UR so you can get around that way but it's definitely more difficult to get places from Rochester. EXCEPT if you're Canadian - for you, it might be easier to get home from Rochester. There is an airport fairly close to both schools. My DD goes to school in Rochester and she has gone on weekends to Niagara Falls and Toronto. It is a bit colder in Rochester than Providence. Very windy. But both places will be cold and snowy in winter.

Hi, Dom! ;)

I think part of your decision should depend on what your non-medical interests are. Is it research? Economics? Music? Finding solutions to global warming? Look at each school and evaluate whether you will be intellectually or artistically engaged there. I know the only reason I'm not running away screaming from Brown's nonexistent scholarships and financial aid (for me, at least) is that as a PLME student, I have tons of room to explore my interest in neuroscience and visual arts while having a great neuroscience program and RISD at my disposal.

Thanks for all the replies so far! i'm so thankful to have all of you help me out!! I'm still on the fence - but siding a bit more towards brown.

I think the thing I wouldn't like about Brown is the lack of diversity. It's a small class to begin with and, in addition, you have a ton of Brown undergrads and a ton of people who are either Rhode Islanders or have ties to Rhode Island. Oh, and the fact the school is in Rhode Island.

jerzgrlmom - i was wondering if you could tell me more about the PLME requirements?

The website is quite brief about the requirements - is there a link you could send me? I could be looking at the wrong page.. There was nothing there about the noGPA requirement, merely "competent scores"

Thanks!

def plme.

jeb90: plme is about the easiest application of all the med prgms (at least the ones i applied to) because all you have to do is fill out 2 extra generic "why i want to go into medicine" essays. plus you don't interview. they really don't have many requirments (i think it was just 3 years foreign language, 4 years english/math/science; but those are necessary for ALL med programs).

no foreign language requirement

PLME requires all the pre-med prerequesites: one semester calculus level math, 2 biology classes, 2 physical chemistry classes, 2 organic chemistry classes, 2 physics classes
