I just got my invitation for interview, but I'm confused... The website says there are up to 1% of Renaissance scholars, but the letter says they are going to have only 10 (out of 50 finalists).

Any Renaissance scholar/finalists who had had an interview before? What exactly are they looking for in the interview?

I would have said that U of R has about 1000 students per class, so 1% would be about 10, which corresponds with your numbers -- I'm not sure why you are confused. Anyway, congratulations and good luck!!

RD, but I applied before Dec.1 to meet the financial aid deadline. I think they have to give out the admission decision for the Renaissance scholar as quickily as possible (mine was sent by next-day mail) b/c the interview is in early March.

Thank you lurkermom, I was confused because 10 seems such a small number

Alright, this is probably a really stupid question.

The letter notified you that you were a finalist, right? So if I applied before December 1 and indicated that I was also applying for merit aid, I'll find out if I "made the cut" fairly soon?

(Note that I don't expect to make finalist status).

my friend is a renaissance scholar at rochester. I guess the interview was pretty basic ... the most important thing you have to distinguish is the fact that rochester is you #1 choice. My friend said that he was the only one of the finalists that he met that was actually 100% certain of enrolling in the school.

My son also got the overnight fed ex for the Renaissance Scholarship telling him he is one of 50 to interview in March and that he was admitted to the school. He was both surprised and excited.

Even if you are not one of the ten to qualify for the full tuition scholarship, they said they would guarantee $40,000 over the four years as long as you take them up on the interview. I have also heard through the grapevine that they have some half tuition scholarships, which some of the remaining 40 will qualify for.

I am curious what kind of assurances they are looking for. Is this simply the guarantee that you would enroll if you got the scholarship, or the promise to enroll whether or not you get the grant? I'm assuming this is something discussed in thoughtful conversation rather than a document you sign like ED. There is no question that son is interested, but we've generally discouraged signing on the bottom line until he has everything in front of him.

thzxcyl - have you decided whether or not to go interview?

Congratulations to those of you who got the interview invitation for this scholarship. I'm just curious if you had the "generic" interview previously with the U of R and this is a "call-back" of sorts......or if this will be your first interview there. Thanks!

In our son's case, this was his previous interaction with the college:

attended an information session in the community in spring of his junior year and made sure to introduce himself to his admissions person,

visited the campus in the summer and did an interview.

Yes, this will be a second interview, but the first one was only a generic and quite brief discussion. He does know more about the school now.

Yes, I'm definitely going to the interview, but I'm also definitely not sure about going to U of R or not :( If they want an assurance, I will be in big trouble. I won't hear from my other schools until at least April.

The main reason is that the main attraction of U of R to me, Eastman, is no longer there b/c I could not scramble up a decent prescreening tape (I am still auditioning in other conservatories though)... So before I hear from the other double programs I'm applying I cannot decide.

So tranman and Cami215: are you/your son going to the interview? Are you/your son sure about attending Rochester?

hmm.. i have a friend who got a renaissance thing (bizarre, he has pretty much the same stats as i do). i don't think he's planning to attend, as he's got another 6 or 7 universities above rochester on the list (he should just give me the darn invitation). as far as i know, he wants to do an interview.

"Sure"? No, my son is not sure, but he is seriously thinking things through at this point. The University has strengths in biology and a wonderful program for non-theater majors. Both are important to him. He plans to interview in March.

To be considered for this, did you have to submit before December 1st? Oh well, either way I didn't get one. Damn damn damn! How amazing would it have been to get one of those...

Whether or not I attend Rochester if I get in depends entirely upon the aid that I receive, preferably merit aid rather than loans. Even though I'm not eligible for this scholarship anymore, I really hope they give me aid because I really like the school...
