Rensselaer Medal

I heard that about a quarter of students accepted to RPI each year are Rensselaer Medal recipients. So there must be a lot of you out there that can relate and advise. Did anyone end up getting any more merit aid than what was guaranteed with the medal? Was winning it in any way helpful at other schools in getting merit aid?

My son was a medalist - he did not get any more merit money from Rensselaer and it did not help at all with other schools (but he did not apply to any other technical schools)

My D received the medal but no addtional monies. I think it only helped round out her resume of awards and accompliments when applying to other schools. She did not apply to any other technical schools. They also are trying to get more females to attend RPI. I think the male/female ratio is 3/1.
Appealing to some but not to my D.

I recieved the RPI medal last year, RPI gave me pleanty of financial aid, none of it was merit based other than the medal. WIth my need based aid all tuition was covered and I have about $5000 to put towards room and board (not including work study). I don't think the medal helped me at any other school.

I was a medalist and am enrolled in the class of 2010 - I got over 28,000 in merit aid (I believe only 15,000 of it is from the medal). One of the awards was a humanities award and the other was for leadership. None of the other schools I applied to gave merit aid, but the RPI medal could probably be used as some leverage if you were in a situation where RPI offered you more merit aid than another school you really wanted to attend. But realistically speaking, how many schools better than RPI give merit aid?

Ctgirl, that's pretty awesome for a merit package. And I agree with your last comment. I wonder if RPI in its desire to attract females might not be more generous with the merit aid for girls. (I assume Ctgirl is in fact female) :-)

Yes, I am female as my name implies :)

I wouldn't be surprised if RPI is more generous in merit aid with females. I head that the male to female ratio for the class of 2009 is 4.5 to 1, so I would assume they want to attract more girls.

If that is their goal, I think they should expand their program offerings for Navigating Rensselaer and Beyond (I just got my packet today!) I can't imagine sleeping in a tent in the woods with no bathrooms, but I would eagerly sign up for Capital Region Shopping Experience :)

Ha ha ctgirl.
I wish you tons of luck at RPI, we are visiting in July to see if it is a possibility for d who is graduating next year. What's your major?

Hey!

I recieved the medal last year. I'm attending RPI in the fall. My family has a EFC of $3000. RPI gave me $33,000 in scholarship, $6250 in federal subsidized loans--leaving about $3500 for out of pocket expenses. All in all, I'd say pretty good. Right now I've got $8500 in outside scholarships :)

I'm a junior and I won it about two weeks ago. I assume that I'll go there. I actually was considering going there even before I won the medal.

I won it like a month ago but I dont think ima end up going. I will probably be at a school like UT, RIce, MIT, WashU or Ga tech. RPI does not appeal to me b.c of teh cold weather with nothing to do in the town of Troy. Bad m/f ratio. Somewhere maybe a lttiel warmer and better m-f ratio would be nicer.

MIT??!! They have a worse ratio than rpi...granted boston is a nicer city, not that i've been there

I got the medal...does this help in admissions? and do they send u a formal letter?

I didn't get a formal letter yet. I'm used to the cold weather. I live in Buffalo, and Buffalo is probably worse than Troy. Troy is not very far from Boston, and the weather in the two places are very similar.

Might have a worse ratio, but there are a **** more ton girls in the area with all the schools nearby. A hell of a lot more girls show up to MIT parties than RPI, and the quality is better too.

I would think MIT students would go to UMass and Northeastern parties rather than the other way around

Well that's not the case, Umass Boston is one of UMass's smaller campuses with many of the students actually being commuters, it's also not as close to the other school. MIT like RPI has a very large greek system with a lot of large houses right along mass ave, and they get girls from a ton of schools such as BU, Emerson, BC, and then all the smaller ones in Boston like Simmons, Suffolk and such. It's an awesome party atmosphere.

I am a female student with a 4.0 GPA unweighted, and am taking the toughest math and science classes available. I will be a senior in the fall. Is it too late have school choose RPI medal scholarship? What are my possiblities?

Here is a link to information on the Medal Program:

However, one of my son's friends (a female) received an equitvalent without the medal and she was not one of the top math/science students in his class, so I would think you have a good chance to receive a merit award from the school.

Well...you maybe surprised...but don't forget...there's also Russel Sage college in Troy (and a lot of girls go up to RPI parties, and activities)
