My daughter just found out that NYU requires $25,000 in contents insurance, plus a $500,000(!) liability policy before she can sign her housing contract. Does anyone know where insurance can be obtained for a reasonable price? She is going to contact her current company which is collegestudentinsurance.com, but so far it looks like they won’t go that high on the liability. Thanks!
Isn’t she covered on your umbrella policy? S found State Farm was about the same price as the specialist college providers and they do offer more flexibility on limits, as well as umbrella policies
I was also going to recommend checking with your own insurance agent. Our insurance covers our D if she is a full time student, up to the age of 24.
Does the university have a company they partner with?
FWIW, that seems like a crazy amount for both contents and liability.
our homeowners covered my D when she was in grad-school housing. Just had to add the address as another insured. (the extra premium wasn’t much, since it was Univ-owned building.)
We found State Farm to be reasonable.
I agree, the limits are crazy.
She would still need renters insurance. The liability portion of the policy is not very expensive, and I would prefer to keep both policies with one company just to make it easier to prove-up the insurance.
So far it looks like Allstate and Farmers have decent programs. We are currently with Farmers, so it looks like I just need a couple more clicks after getting the quote in order to purchase the policy.
My daughter is on a tight deadline, so the decision will be made soon.
Our kid needed similar coverage for a rental while in professional school. Since the kid already had car insurance in that state, we suggested she contact her car insurance carrier. She did…and they “bundled” her renters insurance with her car. The additional premium was just over $100 a year. BUT, she got a $100 “discount” because she now had a bundle.
We thought she was kidding…but she wasn’t!
Very popular at my sons school and with kids renting in NYC. Quick online quote.
Thank you! You’re right, it only took a couple minutes to set up a quote. It looks like all they would need is a credit card to finish setting up the policy.
My daughter had handled this completely on her own for her off-campus apartment(s). Paying around $230/year through Lemonade.
My daughter finally signed up with Lemonade, and she was able to set it up with the exact limits that the school needed.
This insurance sound good
