Repeat Courses?????

I am sure this was mentioned somewhere else and i did some reaserch but never got a clear cut answer. I took english 1 and made a D in the class. I then retook english 1 and made a C. My current institution drops the D and counts the C in gpa calculations. although the D still show up with a star next to it on my trascript. its not calculated in my instituions gpa because i retook it.

So my question is does aamc count both of those grades meaning d and c and combine them into one grade. SO it becomes a D+ and counts as 3 credit hours??? because it is the same class with the same credit hours.

Or do they individually count it into gpa. Meaning a d avereged in for 3 credit hours and a C avereged in for another 3 hours. ???

Can anybody explain the way this is done for repeat courses. Also would it be a good idea to repeat english 1 for me and try to make an A. Or would it even matter since it took me 3 trys??

I think that they’ll average the grade rather than count the grades individually.

Don’t retake it. Even if you’re sure you’d make an A in it, it would still be on the third try, and if you didn’t make an A in it, then it would look even worse.

Seriously, how hard can english be?

wow??? really optic thanks for making me feel so good. i took it in high school when i really did not care about much thats why. on top of that it is my second language!!

can anyone confirm what ginnyvere said???

also i live in texas i dont know if that matters. because i heard medical schools in texas have some sort of forgivness or something in grades.

They definitely average it so it counts as a D+/C-. I guess your question is whether it counts as 3 credits of a D+ or 6 credits of a D+. I’m not sure of the answer.

And seriously dude, do not retake the class for a second time. You have nothing to gain.

thanks for reply norcalguy i was thinking the same on retaking it. if anybody else has some knowledge plz let me know thanks

Just to confirm what NCG said, AMCAS counts all grades (including the old grades for classes you retook) into your GPA, so in that sense they are “averaged”. But to answer your question, it is calculated as a 3 unit D and a 3 unit C (for a total of 6 units).

One of the great things about going the DO route for people who have had to retake a lot of classes is that AACOMAS (the DO application service) only takes the most recent grade for any given course when calculating GPA.

thanks for the clarification Icarus i wish they counted it as 3 credit hours for both grades.

:(

Can anyone verify the rules on GPA calculations of repeated courses for Texas medical schools?

I would think the GPA calculations for Texas schools would be the same as those for med schools in general.
