repeat?

I am wondering how much of a setback repeating ninth grade will be. I am actually supposed to be going into 8th grade this august because of my late birthday but instead i will be starting high school. If i were to apply for boarding school, i would obviously have to apply for tenth grade. So my question is which is better repeating ninth grade or enterting a boarding school in 10th grade

Also if i did repeat 9th grade, do i apply to a school with my 8th grade info or ninth grade info?

you may definitely benefit from repeating 9th grade. you will apply with both 8th and 9th grade grades, but your teacher recs will be from 9th grade teachers. Given your late bday in your situation it will be not a setback, but a smart move.

Cake_dolls, I was contemplating repeating a year earlier this week. I wanted to get the full four years experience, but realized that I didn’t want 5 years of high school. Also, if money is an issue, it may be better for your family (as it is with mine) to only have to pay three years of boarding school tuition.

I thought the same about the whole 4 years experience thing! I don’t mind being in 5 years of high school (because of my age) and since I am mostly interested in Andover, which has a need blind program, I don’t think money would be a problem.

I don’t mean to discourage you or offend you, but Andover has a low acceptance rate. Not that you aren’t qualified for Andover, but just that it’s selective and you never know what could happen.

(I’m also interested in Andover partly because of its need-blind program <laughs>)</laughs>

Are you allowed to apply for FA to only one school?

No, you can apply to as many schools as you like, with FA or without.

what do colleges think about kids that repeat, even at the top schools. I can’t help but think that I’ll be at a disadvantage since I’m repeating, especially since I’m probably gonna retake classes since I failed my placement tests

I also wanted to know that tennisgeek1. Also is it common at Andover specifically to be a repeat (girl)?

at the school i’ll be going to (hotchkiss) everybody says that it’s really common to repeat, but so far I have only met boys who have repeated, but that means nothing since I am not a student yet

From what I’ve read on different threads, there are many repeats. For me, however, I don’t think I want five years of high school and have to force my parents to pay four years worth of tuition…

Anyhow, it might be more common at some schools than others. Anyone have any input on the matter?

Common at all NE prep schools.

My son will also be a repeat as a lower mid at Hotchkiss this fall. Because of a crippling injury this year, he lost his entire sophomore year athletically. With a BS, he will now be able to recapture his lost year in athletics while, at the same time, enhance his high school transcript in academics. Having the chance to repeat his sophomore class but not any of his sophomore courses is a God send for my son.
