So basically I got a D in Pre-AP Pre-Calculus. Worst grade of my life. I plan on retaking it next year due to the fact that Universities these days don't take D or lower. HOW BAD does this look on a transcript? What if I get an A or B in it next year? Also, will the new grade next year replace this D or not? How will the GPA system work/change? I am going to be a junior, meaning that I was technically a year ahead of the "smart" kids, or 2 years ahead of what is considered to be normal. I'm very frustrated with myself for just wasting this year and all of its hard work. I'm not shooting for anything like Berkeley or UCLA, more like UC Merced.
This years 2.4 GPA unweighted(yea I know) brought my overall GPA down to 3.4. What are my chances of going to college? I just want to be successful in life.....lol don't we all.

Also I have some very easy classes to take for next year. Is this good? I will definitely be able to raise my GPA. I'm afraid of taking hard classes again and struggle to pass like I did with Pre-Calc.

I’m pretty sure it will replace your grade from last year if you take it again. You still have a great chance! Just focus on improving your grades next year and improving. Colleges love to see improvement and determination, so don’t give up!

I’m pretty sure Merced’s average accepted HS GPA is about 3.5, so you’re not too far off and if you improve a lot next year you can raise it pretty easily and then you’ll have a pretty good chance of going there.

If not, community college then transferring doesn’t mean failure in life, and it’s actually easier to go to even better schools through the transfer program than it is straight out of high school, so that could be a great opportunity! Plus, if you transfer to lets say UCLA, your diploma won’t say community college transfer to UCLA… it will just say UCLA ;D

Just don’t get down about one bad grade. Life goes on, and gets better believe me.

Oh I didn’t really answer your questions… I don’t know how the GPA/grade change works exactly, ask your counselor. If you’re only going to UC Merced, I’m sure re-taking a class won’t hurt your chances very much. It will help your GPA to take easier classes, but colleges also want to see that you’re challenging yourself by taking harder classes. It’s a difficult balance to find.

Thank you for the encouragement. You are completely right. I’m young and one class is not the end of the world. I can still go to community college and do something with my life.

I am getting a D in ib math hl (same deal) as well, and always had the back up plan of going to my CC and transferring to Berkeley after two years. However, thanks to the voter disconnect between taxes passed and education opportunities, this is quickly becoming a very much so ** less ** viable option. Classes are too difficult to get at California CCs, the requirements to transfer up into the UC system are ramped up. So just go get some information on how your CC is doing before you make any decisions.

Define “be successful in life.”
