Repeating a course - My Chances?

Hello all,

In the Spring 2007, I received a D in one of my English courses (the equivalent of first semester academic writing, or the AP English equivalent). The grade was very unfair and I was in a position where I could not withdraw from the class before it was too late. I retook the class with a different prof in the Summer and I got an A.

I will explain my unusual situation in my app, but what I want to know is this; will this grade have a very negative impact on my chances? I know Penn says one's app should be "free of failures." Would Penn and other school consider this a "failure?" I'll be sending a rec from a different English professor as well, he will affirm my superb writing ability.

Can anyone with admissions knowledge bear some light on this?

Thanks.

er, yes a D does seem to be a failure...when you take a class p/f at most schools the cut off is a C or C-...i dont know if receiving an A in a course you took already will mean much when most people only get one crack at it...it looks like this course was taken early in your college career however, perhaps if the rest of your application is immaculate they could overlook it a little bit, but with an acceptance rate well into the single digits, they do not have to and probably won't...
